PSC 06-12-97 MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE PUBLIC SAFETY COI~I~IISSION HELD JUNE 12, 1997 CONFERENCE ROOM A, CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA 7:30 PM I. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Chuck Pickett. II. SALUTE TO THE FLAG: The Salut~ was led by the Chair. Slack, Sheriff's Department Staff Absent: Chief Sporleder, Santa Clara County Fire Department Visitors Present: None IV. APPROVAL OF MINUrieS: May minutes approved as corrected. V. REPORT FROM THE SHERIFF'S OlqqCE: Lt. Slack distributed crime statistics through May 1997. He commented that the rise in vandalism cases may be attributed to the recent arrests of the graffiti suspects that occurred last month. There was an arrest in Sunnyvale of a robbery suspect that may be responsible for a bank robbery in Cupecdno. Additionally, there was a recent arrest of some juveniles who are believed to be responsible for auto burglaries. There was a parole search of a residence on N. Stelling Rd. for possible narcotics manufacturing. The drug manufacturing was unfounded, however it is reported that there was possible sales of narcotics occurring from the house. Lt. Slack discussed the preparation for the 4th of July festival. There will be two deputies on the new Sheriff's Department bicycles supplementing other patrol unim monitoring the festival. VI. REPORT FROM CENTRAL FIRE None. VII. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS The Chair had contact with Ernest Tsui from the Telecommunications Commission and recommended that the Public Safety Commission would assist them in a consulting type role. The commission agreed with that recommendation. Public Safety Commission Minutes Page 2 Regular Meeting of June 12, 1997 The Chair attended the Mayor's Breakfast and commented that the Mayor received the commissions written support of the School Resource Officer. Commissioner Drexler will attend the Jane Mayor's Breakfast. VIII. WRITrEN COMMUNICATIONS: Commissioner Zander provided the Chair with a video he received from the Seattle Transportation Dept. regarding bicycle safety. Commissioner Zander also distributed information he received from the intemet on another Public Safety Commission. The Chair advised the commission that he submitted an application to reserve a space for the Wine & Art Festival. IX. OLD BUSINESS: Thc commission discussed the procedure for thc administration of thc Neighborhood Watch Program. The commission discussed the procedure for the requisition of Neighborhood Watch signs after a watch group has been established for a particular neighborhood. The commission decided to recommend to the Public Works Depamnent that ff a presentation was given to a group and that neighborhood did not have any Neighborhood Watch signs, that a request could be made to the Public Works Department. It was agreed that the design of the current signs was acceptable and that the commission would not pursue signs in other languages. X. NEW BUSINESS: The C-hiportino Web Site topic was moved to the July meeting. The commission discussed the planning of the Wine & Art festival. Arrangements will be made to obtain information from the Fire Department, Sheritt's Department, and Disaster Preparedness. The Chair will communicate with commissioner Corr with regards to the earthquake preparedness kits that were sold at last years festival. XI. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM.
