The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Chuck Pickett.

IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
July minutes approved as submitted.
V. REPORT FROM THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE:
Sgt. Kirby distributed crime statistics through August 1997, and discussed the various monthly statistical
areas. There were no significant changes in any activity. He further advised the commission of the tluee
large upcoming events that will be occurring on Saturday, October 4, 1997. These events include the
Cupertino of Bands, Oktobeffest at Memorial Park, and the De Anza Flea Market.
VI. REPORT FROM CENTRAL FIRE
Bm. Chief Smith distributed fire statistics for June and July 1997. He advised the commission of a recent
arrest of four individuals who threw Moltov Cocktails on the roofs of several homes in the area of
Rainbow Dr. and thc Union Pacific railroad tracks.
Chief Smith also distributed a descnpUon and account of the recent Cats fire. He discussed the fire
timeline, the progression of the fire, and a description of ail the involved mutual aid agencies.
VII. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
The commission debriefed after the recent Wine/Art Festival. The commission advised that a
considerable amount of literature regarding earthquake preparedness and the neighborhood watch
program.

VIII. WRITrI~N COMMUNICATIONS:
The Chair and Conunissioners Corr, Drexler, and Chcckman all received information on upcoming team
building training from the Citizens of Cupertino Cross Cultural Consortium.
IX. OLD BUSINESS:
The Cupertino Web Site topic was temporarily taken off of any upcoming agendas until City Staff can
update the commission on the employment of a new Webmaster.
X. NEW BUSINESS:
The commission briefly discussed the topic of graffiti. Staff informed the commission of an anti-graffiti
program that the City of San Jose has implemented. The commission was interesled in hosting a
presentation from this anti-graffiti program at a future meeting. Staff will conlact the prograra
administrator to arrange a presentation.
