PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION HELD OCTOBER 10, 2002

I. CALL TO ORDER:
The Chair, Emma Darknell, called the meeting to order.

IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
July minutes were approved.
V. REPORT FROM COUNTY FIRE:
Chief Lopes distributed and discussed the monthly statistics for the months of June, July and August.
Chi&Lopes told the commission that a structure fire occurred on Patriot Way on August 29, 2002.
Chief Lopes told the commission that a fire occurred at the Shane Company.
Chief Lopes advised the commission that on August 30, 2002 a (2) two inch gas main ruptured at the
construction site on De Anza Blvd. at Stevens Creek Blvd.
Chief Lopes advised the commission that a water main broke on August 13, 2002 in the area of Creekside
and Par Lap.
Chief Lopes told the commission that the honor guard would be traveling to New York City to honor the
fallen fighters from 9/11.
Chief Lopes told the commission that a vehicle struck a fire hydrant near Vallco Mall.
Chief Lopes advised that an unknown suspect(s) used a flare in an attempt to start a fire in a dry brush area
in the Rancho San Antonio Trail. Chi&Lopes advised a passerby was walking on the trails and observed
the flare on the ground and extinguished it with a water bottle.

VI. REPORT FROM THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE:
Captain Bacon advised the commission that the October fest will be occurring this weekend at Memorial
park.
Captain Bacon distributed and discussed the monthly statistics for the month of September 2002.
Captain Bacon told the commission that the Child Safety Fair will occurring on October 26th. Between
10am and 3pm in the lower parking of Vallco Fashion Park.
Captain Bacon told the commission that robbery's and residential burglaries are down. Captain Bacon
advised that domestic assaults and vandalisms are both up.
Captain Bacon advised that the SherifFs Office purchased a new helicopter.
Co~nmissioner Dot asked Captain Bacon if the city could make the punishment stricter for red light runners.
Commissioner Darknell asked Captain Bacon if the Sheriff's Office could hire someone to write just traffic
tickets.
Commissioner Darknell told Captain Bacon that she would like to see the statistics for photo light running.
Captain Bacon advised the cormnission that he will be looking into it for the commission.
Commissioner Darknell would like to see the traffic fines raised for red light running.
Vll. COMMISSIONERS REPORT:
Commissioner Darknell advised that she could not open up the Traffic Safety Committee e-mail that
contains the minutes. Jeff Trybus recommended that a hard copy of the minutes be sent to each of the
commissioners.
Commissioner Darknell advised the commission that she attended the Mayors breakfast and the Fine Arts
Commission approved the artwork for the new town center and they are looking for an artist.
Commissioner Darknell advised the commission that a half of the tennis court in the basement of the
Cupertino Sports Facility would be used for a teen sports center.
Commissioner Darkenell advised the commission that a Multi-Cultural festival will be occurring on March
8, 2002 and the festival will have different food booths for residents to enjoy.
Commissioner Darknell advised the commission that the City of Cupertino has a long range plan to start a
downtown village that will contain on street parking and moving stores closer to the street.
Commissioner Darknell told the commission that De Anza College would not be hosting a fire works due to
all the construction that is occurring on the property.
Commissioner Darknell told the commission that Valley Transportation Authority would be pulling in a bus
station at De Anza College.

Commissioner Darknell received an agenda for the Saratoga Public Safety Commission meeting
XI. NEW BUSINESS:
Commissioner Dot told the commissioners that some people are reluctant to add a speed bump on their
street because you may not able to remove it. JeffTrybus advised Commissioner Dor that he would ask the
Public Works Department if a speed bump could be removed.
Commissioner Dor advised the commission that he feels the commission should be kept in the loop for the
Stevens Creek Trail feasibility study.
