LIB 07-03-07 City of Cupertino Library Commission Regular Meeting July 3, 2007 1. CALL TO ORDER At 7:05 p.m., Commissioner Miller called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue, Conference Room A, Cupertino. 2. ROLL CALL Commissioners: Ram Gopal, Ron Miller, Janet Riddell, Kathy Stakey City/County Staff: Pamela Moore Absent: Susanna Tsai 3. MINUTES Commissioner Riddell moved to approve the minutes of the June 6, 2007 regular meeting. Commissioner Stakey seconded and the motion passed unanimously with Tsai absent. 4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None. S. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS - None. 6. CUPERTINO COMMUNITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Pamela Moore reviewed the attached monthly report. 7. COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Melinda Cervantes was not present. 8. ST AFF REPORTS None. 9. OTHER REPORTS A. Mayor's Breakfast Liaison Report The Commission reviewed a draft report of the June meeting. 10. NEW BUSINESS A. California Reading & Literacy Improvement Bond Act The Commission concurred to put this item on the August agenda. July 3, 2007 Library Commission Minutes Page 2 11. OLD BUSINESS A. Theater Tax Status Update No staff member present to provide an update. B. DVD Kiosk The Commission concurred to place this item on the August agenda. C. Library Building Corrective Work - Lights in Story Room & Staircase "Slide" It was noted that the lights had not been fixed and the staircase issue was still unresolved. Library staff must still monitor children - staircase is a liability. It was also noted that the automated materials handling system needs to be installed. The Commission concurred to add this item to the August agenda. D. California Reading & Literacy Improvement Bond Act Commission concurred to add this item to the August agenda. E. Friends of the Library It was noted that Friends would furnish staff room at the library at a cost of approximately $9,000 (tables, chairs, etc.). Commissioners Riddell and Stakey are on the committee. F. Library Foundation It was reported that recruiting new members is the current focus. 12. CALENDAR The Commissioners attendance of future Mayor's breakfast meetings was rearranged. 13. AGENDA BUILDING Discussion of janitorial costs for Monday hours. Two hour parking on Torre and Rodrigues. Event Parking Items noted above. 12. On June 19, 20 teens gathered in the Teen Group Study Room for a scrapbooking program. Many Adults also showed interest in this program, so we will have a separate program for them. Twenty-seven teens gathered in the Story Room on June 23 to hear a Santa Clara County Crime Lab tech discuss her job and talk about actual cases. For our final GET TECH program for junior high teens, a NASA research scientist gave a presentation on June 23 to 33 young people and 32 adults in the Community Hall. Summer of Mystery, the general theme for the summer reading clubs for children, teens and adults, is well under way. Fifteen adults, 182 teens, and 1,432 children have signed up so far. Children's fun programs begin July 5 with crafts in the Story Room. On Saturday, July 7, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco will present be a slideshow at 2:00 p.m. on the woodblock artist Yoshitoshi. Adults are invited to come to booktalks and a discussion of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See on Thursday, July 19 at 7:00 p.m. Teens will search for clues on Saturday, July 21, to discover Who Killed the Music Librarian. Young people and their parents will compete in a Harry Potter trivia contest at on Saturday, July 28 at 2:30 p.m. Pamela Moore o
