LIB 06-06-07 City of Cupertino Library Commission Regular Meeting June 6, 2007 1. CALL TO ORDER At 7:02 p.m., Commissioner Janet Riddell called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue, Conference Room 100, Cupertino. 2. ROLL CALL Commissioners: Ram Gopal, Janet Riddell, Kathy Stakey City/County Staff: Pamela Moore, Melinda Cervantes Absent: Ron Miller, Susanna Tsai 3. MINUTES Commissioner Stakey moved to approve the minutes of the May 2, 2007 regular meeting. Commissioner Gopal seconded and the motion passed unanimously with Miller and Tsai absent. 4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None. 5. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS - None. 6. CUPERTINO COMMUNITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Pamela Moore reviewed the attached monthly report. 7. COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Sarah Flowers reviewed the attached monthly report. 8. ST AFF REPORTS None. 9. OTHER REPORTS A. Mayor's Breakfast Liaison Report It was noted that Mayor Wang would be attending one of the Commission meetings. 10. NEW BUSINESS A. California Reading & Literacy Improvement Bond Act The Commission concurred to leave this item on future agendas. B. Theater Tax to Fund Additional Library Hours It was noted that the City proposal would require a vote of the community. June 6, 2007 Library Commission Minutes Page 2 11. OLD BUSINESS A. DVD Kiosk The Commission concurred to leave this item on future agendas. B. Friends of the Library The book sale held on June 2nd and 3rd was successful. C. Library Foundation The Foundation is looking for name recognition. A membership drive will be conducted this October. 12. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned by Vice Chair Riddell at 8:25 p.m. 6-6-07 Community Librarian's Report Cupertino Library Commission Our Asian-Pacific Islander Month programs were all very successful. Twenty people attended the family performance of Pacific Sticks on May 5, twenty-three people attended the meditation discussion presented by Sahaj Marg on May 19, and forty-eight people attended the "Journey to Success" discussion presented by Chiao-Chu Li on May 26. Ten junior high young people participated in our second Get Tech challenge on buoyancy on May 5. An adult booktalking program on May 15 at the Chateau Cupertino drew 12 people. The poetry submitted to the April teen poetry contest was so good that there were 3 honorable mentions in each of two age categories. We have posted the winning poems in the Teen Room and they may go up on our website. Starting on June 2, librarians Judy Dana and Annapurna Dandu are going to team up to do a booktalking and book discussion program once a month for adults. June's book will be The Beekeeper's Apprentice and July's book will be Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Adults may sign up at the adult reference desk and get a copy of the book. There will be book discussions in June, July and August for young people who have finished 4th grade up to 8th grade. The first book is Last Shot by John Feinstein, which will be discussed on Tuesday, June 19 at 3:00 p.m. in the library Story Room. Children may sign up at the children's reference desk and get a copy of the book. Once again this year, we will be having adult, teen and children's summer reading clubs. Adults and teens may sign up at the adult Reference Desk. Signups for children begin on Saturday, June 16, after school gets out. The theme this year is "Summer of Mystery." Teen programs in June include a scrapbook program in the Teen Group Study Room on June 19 at 3:00 p.m., and a talk by a DNA criminologist on June 23 at 2:00 p.m. in the library Story Room. A NASA representative will present the final Get Tech program on Space Exploration for junior high young people on June 23 at 2:30 p.m. in the Community Hall next door to the library. Pamela Moore Interim Community Librarian Library Commissioners Report Melinda Cervantes, County Librarian Santa Clara County Library June 2007 1. Senator Simitian has introduced SB 156 California Reading and Literacy Improvement and Public Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act of 2008. If passed by the State Legislature and signed by the Governor, this Proposition could appear on a ballot in November 2008. Update: The Senate Appropriations Committee decided to hold SB156, in committee on "suspense." Bills on "suspense" have until January 31, 2008 to be sent to the floor for a vote. 2. The Morgan Hill Library will close June 9th to begin moving into the New Morgan Hill Library. The Grand Opening will be held on July 21,2007 at Noon. Everyone is welcome to attend. 3. The 2008 Silicon Valley Reads book is Distant Land of My Father by Bo Caldwell, the debut novel of a Cupertino author that tells the story of betrayal and reconciliation spanning several years across two continents "The Distant Land of My Father" by Bo Caldwell will be the subject of numerous programs throughout Santa Clara County in February 2008, when readers throughout Silicon Valley are asked to read the same book, at the same time, and discuss it. This will be the sixth year of Silicon Valley Reads, which is co-sponsored by the Santa Clara County Library, the Santa Clara County Office of Education, and San Jose Public Library Foundation. The goals of the program are to promote reading and literacy while building a sense of community through dialogue among widely diverse readers. 4. The JP A Board will adopt the FY2007/08 Santa Clara County Library Budget at their next meeting on Thursday, June 7, 2007 at 2:00PM.
