Commissioner:

Staff present: Don McCarthy - Recreation Supervisor, Therese Smith - Director,

4. MINUTES
A. Motion: The minutes of the January 4th, 2007 Parks and Recreation
Commission Meeting was unanimously approved 4-0.
5. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - none
6. UNFINISHED BUSINESS -
A. Sport Center pool reuse alternatives. Commissioner Bradford excused herself
from discussion.
The Commission took comment from members of the public regarding possible
amenities that could be constructed in the space. There was comment opposing the
skate park option as incompatible with tennis and the surrounding neighborhood.
There was support for constructing another tennis court. It was reiterated that the
City Council was interested in expanding recreational opportunity beyond tennis.
Presenation: Anshel Bhagi of the Teen Commission advocated for a climbing wall
and presented some informal polling data. The Commissioners discussed the
possibility of a climbing wall and how it might be included at the center. There is
nothing to attach it to in the pool area, and it was suggested that a racquetball court
inside the center might work better. Anshel thought an old racquetball court would
work and that an inside wall would allow inside use.
With respect to the pool area, Commissioners felt that a multi-purpose sports
court would serve the greatest number of residents for the capital cost.
Motion: In short term, recommend multi purpose sport court as alternative
to existing swimming pool. In medium term, create a new site for community
gymnasium.
The motion passed 3-0
8. ADJOURNMENT
