WRITTEN COMMUNICATION All commissioners received an invitation to the swearing in of the new Mayor, Michael Chang. NEW BUSINESS Commissioners discussed the questions they want to pose to George Berhitoe, Chairperson of the San Jose Public Library Commission, who has been invited to talk about the San Jose Library Commission and about their participation in the San Jose Public/San Jose State Joint Library project at the December commission meeting. Commissioners want to pose some of the same questions to George Berhitoe as those asked of Marcia Manzo, Chairperson of the Saratoga Library Commission last month. In addition, they have some questions regarding the Joint Library project and the San Jose Public Library Commission's participation in the planning process. Chairperson Diana Wu will present the Library Commission's Annual Report to the City Council at the December 2, 2002 City Council meeting. The Library Parking Task Force, made up of Commissioners Riddell and Stakey, presented a draft report to the commission. One issue they raised was that if there are large events on the plaza, and if Parks and Rec has been given the charge from the city to make the Civic Plaza a very active place, what will be done to accommodate the need for additional parking spaces. The larger library will already draw more people., There are only approximately 6 additional parking spaces over the current number of parking spaces. Carol Atwood said that she would follow up on their questions. Commissioner Riddell also asked about operable windows in the new library. Mountain View Library, where she works, has some operable windows, and they have had problems with having birds fly into the library. Commissioners would like to have verbal updates on the New Library and will invite Public Works Director Ralph Qualls to keep them updated on a monthly basis. The commission would also like library staff to come and talk about various library programs and services, and will develop a possible agenda schedule for the year. OLD BUSINESS Standing Reports: Legislative Update: The budget outlook is grim. Sister Libraries: The Hsinchu City artwork was to have gone on display at the Senior Center, but up to now the Senior Center has only accepted artwork done by senior citizens. The next regular meeting of the foundation board will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2002. Friends of the Library: The next Friends membership meeting will be held on Monday, January 6, 2003 in Conference Room A at City Hall, which is where the Friends will meet, while the library is in its temporary quarters.
