CALL TO ORDER

Gertrude Welch spoke about the need to continue discussions on aflbrdablc housing in thc
community. Ms. Welch shared a couple or' newspaper articles regarding homclcssncss and lack
of affordable housing in Santa Clara County.
New Business:
Verbal Update on Revision of rental rates for BMR units: Dick Schuster stated that
Cecilia Fu, Vera Gil and Joe Madigan met and talked about problems with increases
rental rates for developments in the City. Another meeting was scl, but c:mccllcd because
information had not been obtained and a second meeting has not bccn scheduled.
Discuss Goal setting of the Housing Committee fi)r 2000: Kathy Robinson asked il'
anyone has thought about new goals fbr the committee. Sylvia Machamcr talked about
density and how we might be able to reduce the number o1' people living in
apartment. Dick Schuster suggested evaluating the housing production I(~r thc last
years in particular sizes and costs and compare those to a projection ol' 10 years in thc
future. Dick suggested compiling figures and providing them to thc Council. I)ick
would also like to re-evaluate the Rehabilitation Loan [)rogram. Kathy Robinson asked
about the committee's mission and would like to re-define thc purpose as well as thc
resources available to fulfill the mission. Kathy l(:lt that thc committee seems t~
reactionary versus pro-active, There have been a few pro. jeers thc committee was
aware until an accidental notification. Kathy would like some type ol' adwmcc notice
when issues are brought to the City that have an impact on housing in Cupertino.
Sylvia added that she would like to see the diversity of the City remain in tact, no! allow
larger homes, and continue to create more altbrdable housing, possibly allowing more
density.
Vera asked whether the committee might be interested in having a lhcilitator and key
staff members set up a workshop to clarify roles and how best to disscminatc information
to the Housing Committee. The committee agreed that this could be a positive step in
helping staff include the Housing Committee in housing type issues.
The Committee agreed to the following goals:
· Increase the supply of affordable by working with the Planning Commission and City
Council and other interested parties.
· Promote the creation of employer assisted housing.
· Preserve existing stock of affordable units
· Work to update the Housing Element
Things that the Council should address:
· Council should utilize the expertise of the Housing Committee more fully, issues lhal
affect development potential of properties should be addressed by the committcc.
What community-wide activities should the City be undertaking in your commission's
area of responsibilities:
· Promote more affordable housing
