MINUTES
Minutes of the December 19, 1995 meeting were approved as written.
ORAL COMMUNICATION
None
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
Invitations to the February 2, 1996 Commissioners Dinner were received by
coromissioners.
Agenda for the January 17, 1996 first meeting of the Citizens Advisory
Commission to the JPA was received. Chairperson Bedord will attend.
Articles appeared in the Cupertino Scene and the Coupertino Courier.
Brochure for the upcoming CALTAC (Cglifornia Association of Trustees and
Commissioners) workshop to be held March 2 in Albany was received.
OLD BUSINESS
CityNet update: Librarian W~llace will check to see that Friends Book Sale
infoL~uation is updated on CityNet.
Library Foundation: Commlssioner Liggett reported that the next meeting of
the Foundation will be tomorrow. The Foundation would lille to include the
encouragement of bequests and trusts in its long range plan. The Foundation
is considering offering canvas bags with a Foundation logo on them for sale as
is done in other local libraries by Friends groups or Foundations.
Friends of the Library Report: The Friends are worlclug on the Book Sale
scheduled for February 10 and 11. They will once again use the library Story
Room as a specially-priced book room in addition to the Community Room for
the sale. The set up for the Book Sale will be Thursday evening, February 8,
1996 at 7:00 pm. As is customary, the Friends will have no Preview Sale.
The Friends will hold a pre-sale meeting on Monday, February 5 at 7:30 pm to
pass out sale flyers and sign up members to work the sale. At their recent
meeting, Friends voted to donate $3,000.00 to the library book budget and
$5,000.00 to purchase a lettering system for Children's Services at Cupertino.
Mayor's Meeting: There has been no mayor's meeting so far.
Calendar update: No changes, updates.
Review of Changes for the Commissioner's Manual: Updates should be sent to
Chslrperson Jean Bedord.
Annual Report: Chairperson Bedord passed out a draft of the annual report for
Commissioners to review and input any additions, corrections. The Annual
Report was approved with corrections.
NEW BUSINESS
Election of officers for 1996: After discussion, it was decided to defer the
election of officers to the February meeting.
Discussion of 1996 Objectives: This was also deferred to the February mtg.
CITY LmRARIAN'S REPORT
Children's Program Librarian Pamela Moore has been presenting a series of
programs on library resources as educational enrichment for parents of
schoolage children from grades K-8 on Friday mornings in January.
Children's Librarian Bonnie Wang will present a series of storyt~mes in
Mandarin Chinese on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm in February.
Adult Reference Librarian Kate Moyle is providing on-going tours of the library
every Monday evening from 7-8 pm and every Wednesday afternoon from 1-2
pm, which include demonstrations of the library catalog, on-line magazine
databases, and the library's text-based access to the World Wide Web.
Flyers for these programs were passed out to commissioners and are available
in the library.
Young Adult Reference Librarian Judy Thompson has contacted the Monta
Vista High School Internet class teacher to see whether students there might
act as docents at Cupertino Library to help library users with text-based
World Wide Web access, magazine databases, and Dynix catalog features.
COUNTY LIB~S REPORT
The county librarian reported that she and city librarian Wallace had met with
City Manager Don Brown and Dr. Michael Chang, city councilperson and the
city's new representative on the JPA Board and had a very positive exchange
of info~mation and ideas.
COMMISSIONERS' COMlVIENTS:
Commissioner Pow reported that he had met with Diane Snow at the Senior
Center on December 22 and had a good exchange of ideas. There are a good
number ofhomebound seniors in the community as well as the active seniors
at the center. Many of the seniors would be interested in various library
services. Commissioner Pow and Librarian Wallace will arrange a ~.ime with
Diane Snow to spe~k with seniors at the Senior Center about library services.
Commissioner Liggett asked about statistics on DialPac usage, which is
tracked by the library and is available.
