The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Minow at 7:30 p.m.

MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER MEETING
The minutes of the September 17, 1996 commission meeting were approved as read.

NEW BUSINESS
Role of Library. Commissioners
The roll of library commissioner was discussed in preparation for Commissioner Bedord's
attendance at the Citizens' Advisory Commission. Discussion focused on how to develop the
relationship with city councils and with the public.
Council relationships:
· year end reports
· regular presentations to city council meetings including those that are televised
· attendance at mayor's breakfasts
offer elected officials opportunities to present library awards and participate in library
programs
· offer venues for council members to express their ideas about library services and
chances for them to see the library in action such as the library tour
Community relationships:
· reach residents who don't use the library currently
· participate in parades, fairs, etc.
· speak to local organizations
establish relationships with local organizations such as PTAs
· contact other city commissions as well as library commissions in surrounding
jurisdictions
· participate in state-wide organizations
· advocate for the library mission
· encourage residents to serve on the commission
· focus on self education and growth
Council tour
Commission discussed details of the October 21 Council library tour.
OLD BUSINESS
Home Page
Thanks to the work of Commissioner Pow, Homestead High School students will be involved in
developing details of Web pages and establishing relationships with site customers. Commissioner
Pow will bring more information to the next commission meeting.
Standing Reports
Library Foundation
· Jerry Ditto gave a presentation on Eichler homes to benefit the Library Foundation. It
was attended by 55 people. The next program will be a speech by former San Jose
police chief and mystery novelist Joseph McNamara. It will take place at Apple on
November 22, 1996.
The Foundation is now a member of the Cupertino Area Planned Giving Council.
Flyers are available in the library to promote the designation of the Library Foundation
through United Way.
Office furniture has been donated for Foundation use and is now in the library
basement.
Friends of the Library
The Booksale is scheduled for October 19 and 10. This sale will have about 50 percent more
books available than usual.
Mayor' s breakfast
Commissioner Pow reported on the Mayor's breakfast.
Calendar Update
A revised calendar was distributed.
CityNet
There has been no change in CityNet.

COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
The Joint Powers Authority will meet on October 24. Approval of the building policy and library
support services reorganization will be on the agenda. It will be Supervisor McKenna's last
meeting and there will be a presentation recognizing her contributions.
COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS
Commissioner Liggett mentioned that he was pleased that the library has a book he had been trying
to find.

City Librarian's Report
Children's librarians presented 17 programs in September for a total
audience of 626 people.
Class (Group) Visits
There was 1 class visit to the library in September for a group of 14
Cub Scouts.
Storytimes
The 4 family bedtime storytlmes on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm (for
ages 3 years and up) reached a total audience of 122 people, an average of 30
participants per session. The 4 Toddler sterytlmes reached 77 toddlers, and a
total audience of 136, averaging 34 participants per session. The 4 Three's
stories (for ages 2.5 to 3.5 on Wednesday mornings at 10:15 sm) reached 134
children, and a total audience of 248, averaging 62 participants per session.
The 4 sessions of Fours and Five's storytimes (on Thursday mornings at 10:45
am reached 67 children, and a total audience of 106 people, averaging 26
participants per session.
Library Tours
41 people took advantage of the library tours in September with Adult
Librarians Kate Moyle, Judy Dana, and Sheila Ho. Library tours are
conducted on Wednesday afte~-,oons from 1-2 pm and on Saturday
afternoons from 2-3 pm, and include explanation of the catalog and an
introduction to searching the World Wide Web. Tour schedule flyers are
available at the library. Group Tours and Small Business Tours are available
by appointment. Call (408) 446-1677.
Graphical Access to the World Wide Web proves very popular
After 6 weeks of experience with graphical as well as text-based access
to the World Wide Web, Cupe,'tlno Library's 11 terminals with graphical WWW
access are in constant use. The library has a 20 minute time limit when
people are waiting for these ter,-ninals. In all, the hbrary has 36 ter,,irlals with
which to search the on-line catalog, as well as magazine and reference
databases, and with text-based access to the World Wide Web.
Extended Sundny Hours (12 noon to 6 pm) al~o very popular
On September 8, 1996 the hbrary began its new schedule of Sunday
service hours from 12 to 6 pm thanks to the Citizens and City of Cupertino!
The extended Sunday hours are proving very popular, as the circulation and
gate count statistics demonstrate.
