Commissioners received copies of the Sunday library service
statistics for the fiscal year 1995/96 and for the first half of the 1996/97 fiscal
year, which show a definite increase in circulation and visits to the library
with the two extra hours on Sunday, approved by the citizens and city of
Cupertino.
The 12 noon to 6 pm Sunday library service hours are well used by the
community. Respondents to the recent Sunday library service hours survey
indicated that Sunday afternoon hours are the most useful to them.
Adult Program Librarian Joanna Seymour and Community Library
Supervisor Mary-Ann Wallace attended a teacher's meeting last week at
Monta Vista High School at the invitation of Principal Mary Stone. They
were able to talk briefly to teachers about the public library's good and bad
experiences with various school assignments, and encouraged teachers to
alert the library in advance to class assignments, so that library staff can
place materials on temporary reference status, giving all students equal
access to them.
An assignment tip sheet was given to teachers, which they can use to
phone or fax notice of assignments easily and quickly to Cupertino Library.
Library staff are always ready to speak to teachers and students here at the
library or at the schools. Teachers and students are also welcome to tour
the library as part of the ongoing library tours on Wednesdays and
Saturdays, or by calling to set up a group tour.
Children's and Adult Reference staff will present an Internet class
for Parents of Schoolage Children from Kindergarten through Grade 8 ~
Saturday, January 25, and will repeat it on February 1 and February 8, all
on Saturday mornings from 9:00 am to 10:00 am in the library. This class is
designed to help parents with a basic introduction to searching techniques,
using both URL's and search engines, and to show them some good Web
sites for children.
The 4 weekly children's storytimes are back to their regular schedule
after the holiday break. Storytime schedules are available in the Children's
Room. Children's Librarian Bonnie Wang will present a series of
Storytlmes in Chinese (Mandarin) on Wednesday evenings: February 5, 12,
19 and 26, 1997. Chinese Storytimes flyers are also available in the
Children's Room.
The Friends of the Cupertino Library / Senior Center trip to the San
Francisco Public Library is slated for April 3, 1997.
Commissioners received copies of the: Internet Class for Parents of
Schoolage Children flyer, the Children's Storytime Schedule, the Chinese
Storytime flyer, the Cupertino Library Foundation mailer and fact sheet,
and copies of the Chamber of Commerce Directory, all of which are
available at the library.
