LIB 03-18-97CUPERTINO LIBRARY COMMISSION MINUTES March 18, 1997 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. ROLL CALL Present: Jillian Hamer Mary Minow Yuhfen Diana Wu Absent: Also present: Iean Bedord Susan Fuller, County Librarian Mary-Ann Wallace, Cupertino City Librarian George Yang Don Brown, Cupertino City Manager MINUTES OF FEBRUARY MEETING The minutes of the Febmory 18, 1997 meeting were approved as written. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS None. NEW BUSINESS Library_ Facility_ Needs Assessment Discussion ensued about the recommendation the Commission will make to the Council. City Manager Don Brown commented on the Council's interest in evaluating building needs. The issue of revenue has not been resolved. Questions raised included importance of a building plan, cost of plan, process, and needs assessment Don Brown suggested that City would develop a more detailed scope before bid is let. Commissioner Pow moved that Council set aside $50,000 in next year's budget to perform needs assessment for the library including options and analysis to satisfy those needs. Commissioner Minow seconded. Unanimous vote. Budget Budget includes money for conference and workshop attendance as well as visits to libraries in the area. OLD BUSINESS Commission will supply material to students at Homestead High School. This issue will be agendized at thc next meeting, and Commisaioner Pow will bring an annotated outline of format for commission to review. Concern was expressed about the slowness of implementation as well as the need to develop a strong relationship with the students. No new information was available. Commissioner Pow talked with City staff about the possibility of an art contest for graphics on the Home Page in the fall. Action Plan for Computers The Mac is now available for patrons. CD ROMs will be featured. High School Library_ Outreach High School Principal.~ David Pa)ne (Homestead) and Barbara Nunes (Cupertino) had a tour of the library. Electronic connections were discussed and the schools will contact the County Library when they have decided what level of service is appropriate. Both principals also indicated they would encourage their teachers and administrators to visit the library. Library Foundation Foundation is considering the Commission's request for a change of meeting time. Plans are made for benefit drawing of Pavarotfi tickets. The drawing will take place May 1. Friends of the Library Last booksale netted $8,200. Friends committed $8,000 for microfilming Cupertino Courier. Mayor's Breakfast Chair Hamer spoke about the diversity workshop. Commissioner Pow will attend the March Mayor's meeting. Calendar Update and Planning Calendar dates were gathered. Citynet No report. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT (See COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT · A proposal to move the Alum Rock Library has bc~n made by a San Jose City councilman. Library staff and JPA Board will review. · San Jose Mercury News symposium was published on Sunday, March 16. Library and County Counsel staff are working with an Internet censorship challenge in South County. ·New Commission roster was distributed. · Legislative breakfast will take place on April 19. Speaker will be Harry Fuller. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS AND AGENDA BUILDING Commissioner Pow: Agendize library needs list before consultant is hired. Commissioner Wu: has been working with local Chinese newspapers to publicize library services. She also indicated that a person expressed concern about political bias in the children's collection, particularly in books on Midd_le Eazt and about having sufficient titles on traditional family values. She was urged to speak with a librarian. Chair Hamer: lanitorial service needs to be improved. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 P.M. Internet Classes for Parents of Schoolage Children are continuing. The class is designed to help parents with a basic introduction to searching techniques, using both URL's and search engines, and to show them some good Web sites for children. The first Saturday morning Parent Internet classe in March had 14 participants. There is one more class in March and two more Saturday morning sesssions in April. The Wednesday, March 12, 1997 evening program on dog behavior with Brian Coyne, dog trainer and canine behaviorist, had an audience of 50 people in the library community room. VITA (Volunteer Income TAY Assistance) volunteers are helping at the library on Saturdays from 11:00 Arn to 2:00 pm in the Story Room and will continue through Saturday, April 12, 1997 to provide free help to low-income, disabled, elderly and non-English-speaking taxpayers in preparing simple federal fo~'~ns 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, and California for~s 540A and 540EZ. The library has a self-help tax form area on the landing between the lobby and the children's room with giveaway fo~ms and binders of reproducible fo~f~-~s. The binders of reproducible fo~us are also available near the copy machine in the lobby. Anyone who cannot physically access the landing for the giveaway fo~'~s may ask at the reference desk on the main floor, and staffwill retrieve the fo~ms for them. Copy machines are located on all three floors. The Cupertino Library Foundation's upcoming fundraiser is an opportunity drawing to be held Thursday, May 1, 1997 at the library for a special Pavarott~ evening, which will take place on Wednesday, May 14, 1997. The evening includes the services of a Town Car, donated by E1 Paseo Limousine for the evening to pick up the winners at home (in the local area), take them to dinner for two, donated by Fontana's It~llan restaurant, and then to the arena, where they will enjoy two $200 seats at the 8 pm Luciano Pavarotti performance at the San Jose Arena, donated by the Juice Club of Cupertino, and then be chauffered home after the concert. Kwik Kopy Printing has underwritten the printing of the tickets. Sign City has donated sign material for a great sign currently on display in the library lobby. With the underwriting of the various elements of the evening by local merchants, all of the proceeds will go directly to the Cupertino Library Foundation for the benefit of the Cupertino Library. Coromlssioners received copies of the new Teen Services brochure, and copies of the Cupertino Library Foun_dation Pavarotti evening opportunity drawing publicity flyer, both of which are available at the library.
