LIB 04-22-97 CUPERTINO LIBRARY COM1VIISSION M]NUTES April 22, 1997 CAI,L TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Jillian Hamer at 7:30 pm. ROLL CAI,L Present: Jean Bedord Jillian Hamer Mary Minow Charles Pow Yufen Diana Wu Also present: Susan Fuller, Santa Clara County Librarian Julie Farnsworth, New Deputy County Librarian Mary-Ann Wallace, City Librarian MINUTES Minutes of the March 18, 1997 meeting were approved as amended. The one correction was that Commissioner Pow was present at that meeting. ORAL COMMUNICATION None. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION Letters and checks were received, confnming that the two Cupe~tino Fine Arts Commission grants applied for by the Library Commission were both awarded. One grant is for $1,000.00 to add Asian, specifically Southeast Asian, and California art books to the library collection, applied for by Commissioner Minow. The second grant was for $2,000.00 for the Library Commission's web page graphics, applied for by Commissioner Pow. The Library Commission will send two thank you letters to the Fine Arts Commission for their continuing support. NEW BUSINESS Planning for Library Facility Needs Assessment Process: Visits to other libraries: Both Chairperson Hamer and Commissioner Pow attended the Friends tour of the San Francisco Public Library on April 3, 1997. Commissioners discussed the necessity of scheduling visits to other new libraries. County Librarian Fuller suggested starting with: Los Altos, Menlo Park, Redwood City, Danville, Pleasanton, Rockridge (and Mountain View, when completed). Library st~W will set up tours of the various libraries, as commissioners are available to tour. Br~instor,¥,ing session: Commissioners gave input as to what they would like to see in a new library facility, both in building design, access, meeting the needs of a diverse community, ~mbiance, and collections and services. City Council Budget Review preparation: Commissioners discussed getting copies of the brainstor,~:ing session input categorized for easier and more focused presentation, and will agendize the budget session discussion for the May meeting. OLD BUSINESS Library Foundation: Chairperson Hamer was able to attend the most recent Foundation meeting, as the meeting time has been changed from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Adult Progrsm Librarian Joanna Seymour also attended in Librarian Wallace's absence. One discussion was preparation for participation in the Chsmber Art and Wine Festival in August. The Foundation, Library Commission, and Friends plan to share a booth, and are hoping for a spot with good foot traffic. Chairperson Hamer agreed to contact the Chamber on behalf of all three groups, and there will be a booth for the three groups to share. The Foundation's current fundraising project is the opportunity drawing for a Pavarotti Evening package featuring two $200 tickets to the Wednesday, May 14, 1997 Pavarotti concert at the San Jose arena, underwritten by the Juice Club of Cupertino, as well as dinner for two at and courtesy of Fontana's restaurant and Town Car service courtesy of El Paseo l.lmousine to and from the concert. The drawing will be held Thursday, May 1, 1997 at the library immediately after the 6 pm closing. There are also other prizes, donated by local merchants and individuals. Friends of the Library: Librarian Wallace reported that the next Friends of the Library Booksale will be held the weekend of May 17 and 18. Saturday booksale hours are 9 sm to 4 pm with no adults allowed into the Children's booksale area until 12 noon on Saturday. Sunday hours are 12 noon to 3 pm. There is no preview sale. MayoFs Breakfast: Commissioner Pow attended the March Mayor's breakfast and reported on it. Chairperson Hamer attended the April Mayor's brealrfast last week, and reported on it to the commission. Calendar update: Chairperson Hamer asked Commission Secretary Wu to keep up this year's calendar, started by by Commissioner Minow. Additions: May 6th is Legislative Day, the next Mayor's Breakt~ast is May 22nd, and the next AI,A (American Library Association) Conference is in San Francisco June 27 through June 30. Cor~rnlssion Home Page: Commissioner Pow presented his outline for the commission's Home Page. Commissioners are in favor of his outline, and asked him to go ahead and contact the school to begin work on it. CITY LIBHARIAN'S REPORT Attached. COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Julie Farnsworth was introduced as the new Deputy County Librarian. Davi Evans, formerly Children's Progrsm Librarian at Morgan Hill Library, has been appointed Children's Services Manager. The new commission roster was distributed. The JPA (Joint Powers Authority) Board will meet on April 24th. The main agenda item will be a budget study session. A petition requesting Internet access restriction has been presented to the Gilroy Library Commission and to the Citizens Advisory Commission (CAC) by several Gilroy parents. This item will be discussed by the Gilroy Library Commission in May and the CAC in June. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS and AGENDA BUILDING: Chairperson Hamer asked that all agenda items for the next meeting be sent to her by May 8th. Agenda items so far include: Planning for the city budget session, Fine Arts Commission grants update, participation in the summer Art and Wine festival, and commission accomplishments and projects. Commissioner Bedord reported on the theme of the Legislative Bresl~fast, partnerships with the media, which she and Commissioner Minow attended along with County Librarian ~,ller and City Librarian W~llace. Commissioner Wu reported that she had included news of the Friends next booksale in the Chinese schools newsletter, which goes out to a couple of thousand homes in the community. Commissioner Pow stated that he hoped that the city might consider adding places for teen activities, such as a skateboard park, so that when teens are told that they may not skateboard right outside the library, there is another place close by that they can be directed to for that activity. Commissioner Minow suggested that the commission agendize Internet access for the May meeting, and discuss the ALA Bill of Rights, which the commission has previously endorsed. The class is designed to help parents with a basic introduction to searching techniques, using both URL's and search engines, and to demonstrate some good Web sites for children. The first Saturday morning Parent Internet class in March had 14 participants, the second class in March had 17 participants; the first Saturday morning sesssion in April had 5 in attendance, and the second class had 13 participants. One class is planned for May to t~lre care of the current waiting list, and if there is still interest, the library will continue to offer one class per month during the s~mmer. Additional classes will be offered in the fall, depending on community interest. VITA (Volunteer Income T~Y Assistance) volunteers were on hand to help at the library on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Story Room through Saturday, April 12, 1997 to provide free help to low-income, disabled, elderly and non-English-speaking taxpayers in preparing simple federal fo~-cus 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, and California forthS 540A and 540EZ. The librarj?s self-help tax form area will remain on the landing between the lobby and the children's room through August with giveaway fo~',~ and binders of reproducibles. Reproducible forms in binders are also available at the copy machine in the lobby. Anyone who cannot physically access the landing for the giveaway fo~-ras may ask at the main floor reference desk, and staffwill retrieve the fo~:~:s for them. Copiers are located on all three floors. The National Library Week book display of staff favorites proved popular, and was nicely accented in both the adult and children's areas with National Library Week Banners purchased by the Friends of the Cupertino Library. The current book display is for Earth Day. The Cupertino Library Foundation's upcoming fundraiser is an opportunity drawing to be held Thursday, May 1, 1997 at the library for a special Pavarotti evening, which will take place on Wednesday, May 14, 1997. The evening includes the services of a Town Car, donated by E1 Paseo Limousine for the evening to pick up the winners at home (in the local area), take them to dinner for two, donated by Fontana's It~ilun restaurant, and then to the arena, where they will enjoy two $200 seats at the 8 pm Luciano Pavarotti performance at the San Jose Arena, donated by the Juice Club of Cupertino, and then be chauffered home after the concert. Kwik Kopy Printing has underwritten the printing of the tickets. Sign City has donated sign material for a great sign currently on display in the library lobby. With the underwriting of the various elements of the evening by local merchants, all of the proceeds will go directly to the Cupertino Library Foundation for the benefit of the Cupertino Library. Opportunity drawing tickets may be purchased at the library circulation desk in the lobby, or from any member of the Cupertino Library Foundation Board. There are only 9 more days to purchase your opportunity drawing ticketsl The next Friends of the Cupertino Library Book Sale will take place the weekend of May 17 and 18, 1997. Booksale Hours on Saturday are 9 am to 4 pm. and on Sunday from 12 noon to 3 pm. Only Children are allowed in the Children's Booksale area from 9 am to 12 noon on Saturday. The Friends will use both the Community Room for the regular booksale items and the Story Room for the Select Book Area. There will be no preview sale. Commissioners received copies of the revised Library Tours flyer, which is available in the library.
