CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by Chair Hamer at 7:30 P.M.

MINUTES OF MAY MEETING
The minutes of the May 20, 1997 meeting were approved as read.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
None.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
None.
NEW BUSINESS
The City indicates that Commissioners may achieve a quorum by calling in.
Commissioners are investigating hardware to make this possible.
OLD BUSINESS
Art and Wine Festival
Planning is underway for Commission activity including publicizing the art contest for the
Commission Web site. The issue of publicizing library needs assessment project at the
festival was discussed.
Fine Arts Commission Grant
Commissioner Pow is assembling a group including Commissioner Pow, a Fine Arts
Commissioner, and a library staff member to establish criteria for the project.
Volunteer Coordination
Rescheduled to July.
plannin_e for Library_ Facili _ty Needs Assessment Process
Chair Hamer and Susan Fuller will meet with Don Brown and city staff to discuss process.
Foundation will meet June 18 and di.~uss planned giving brochure and a fall mailer.
They are considering a penny campaign. Media support is essential for this effort.
Foundation applied for State Library grant for organization of development.
$3,500 was donated for computer and printer from Tandem.
Friends of the Library_
Booksaie netted $5,900 at last sale. Friends looking at Bylaws and reorganizing to
spread workload through organization.
Commissioner Minow will attend the June Breakfast.
Calendar Update and Planning
Citizens' Advisory Commission will meet July 2 in Gilroy. Commissioner Bedord
moved that the Chair may designate an alternate if the regular person cannot attend.
Seconded by Commissioner Hamer. Unamimously approved. Mary Minow was
designated.

CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT

COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
· JPA approved library budget on June 5. A new phone system and computer upgrades
were among items approved.
· Discussion of Intemet access continues. JPA will agendize this issue at its October
meeting.
· Deputy County Librarian Julie Farnsworth started work
COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS AND AGENDA BUILDING
Mary Minow spoke to South State Library System about libraries and law.
Commissioner Wu continues to recruit for volunteer coordinator.
Chair Hamer reports an upbeat Special Library Association conference.

Intm-~et Classes for Parents of Schoolage Children are contining
through the s~mmer months. The class is designed to help parents with a basic
introduction to searching techniques, using beth URL's and search engines, and
to demonstrate some good Web sites for children. The Saturday morning
Parent Intemet class in June will be held on June 21, 1997 and is i~lled up. The
library will continue to offer one class per month during the s~mmer: Next
classes will be held on July 12 and August 16. Additional classes will be offered
in the fall to meet community interest.
Snmmer Reading Club signups started yesterday. The theme this
summer is Reading Safari, and the children's reference st~ffhave done a
great job with the bulletin board display of a lion in the tall jungle grass.
Volunteers have been helping to sign up children. On the first day we signed up
223 kids. The total by late this afternoon was . The first Thursday
S~mmer Reading Club Program will be held on June 26 with two perfo~,-,;ances
by Circus Soozee, a Clown/Juggler, paid for by the Friends of the Cupertino
Library. Children are asked to attend only one perfoL'~nance. PerfoLmers
present the same program twice, so that we can accommodate as many
children as possible. The first Tuesday craft program, working on a mural of
an African savannah, will be held on July 1 at 2:30 for children 5 years of age
and up.
The library's serf-help tax for~ area will remain on the landing
between the lobby and the children's room through August with giveaway
fo~'~ns and binders ofreproducibles. Reproducible forthS in binders are also
available at the copy machine in the lobby. Anyone who cannot physically
access the landing for the giveaway foL-,,,s may ask at the main floor reference
desk, and stnffwill retrieve forms for them. Copiers are located on all floors.
The current book display on the main floor is for our Tccn S~mmer
Readlrtg Program. Teens who read 5 books or more over the s~mmer
months and write one book review that will be kept on file in the library for
other teens to read will be awarded a gi~ certi_'t~cate to a local bookstore,
purchased by the Friends of the Cupertino Library. The Teen S~mmer
Reading Program runs from June 16 through August 24. So far, we've signed
up 21 teens for the teen s~mmer reading. Details are available at the adult
reference desk on the main floor.
Commissioners received copies of the 1997 Tccn Snmmer Reading
flyer and Tccn Page Web Site bookmark, the Snmmer Storytlme flyer, our
Inte~'~mt Infor.~ation flyer, and a flyer on the Antarctica travelog program
to be held at the library on June 25th at 7:00 p.m., All of which are available in
the library.
