CALL TO ORDER
Meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chair Hamer.

Minutes of the meeting of August 19, 1997 were approved as read.

Libra~_ Facility Needs Assessment Process: RFP_for libra~_ desie_n consultant
Deputy County Librarian Julie Famsworth distributed the draft of the RFP for a building
consultant. The consultant's task would be to do a building program and a site analysis.
Concern was expressed about providing appropriate amounts of Commission review.
Commissions want to be certain that a needs assessment and site evaluation be part of the
final report. The two parts will be bid separately.
Some commissioners want a branch considered as part of the analysis.
Commissioners requested identification of other community information resources
especially in terms of electronic connections.
Julie Famsworth will distribute the revised RFP to the Commission and a final decision
will be made at the October 21, 1997 meeting.
~raphic Art Grant Administration
Commissioner Pow distributed the description and rules about the art contest. Entries will
take place between November 1 and December 31, 1997. The purpose of the contest is to
develop graphic art for the City's web site. Carol Atwood was mentioned as being very
helpful.
Southeast Asia Art Grant
Materials are on display at the library.
Volunteer Coordination
Commissioners discussed recruiting a volunteer coordinator. Mary-Ann Wallace will call
Carol Atwood to investigate placing an ad for the Volunteer Coordinator on the City's web
page.
United Way campaign will include a way to donate to the Cupertino Foundation.
The Penny Campaign starts October 2, 1997 at the library.
The State Library grant has supported the Foundation survey.
The Foundation's next meeting will be October 8, 1997.
Friends of the Libram_
The Booksale will be held October 18 and 19.
Friends are working on organization and bylaws.

Count_ Librarian Report
Markkula Center will complete their report on October 5, 1997. The report will be part of
the Citizens' Advisory Commission and Joint Powers Authority Board october meeting
packets.
Building projects in Morgan Hill, Saratoga and Gilroy are progressing as well as the
Cupertino project.
San Jose City Council voted to affirm their library policy of open access.
COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS AND AGENDA BUILDING
Mary Minow
Commissioner Minow suggested publicity for the school-public library electronic link and
asked that subject be agendized in November.
She will be a talk on filters at the Library of Congress on October 15, 1997.
Yuhfen Diana Wu
Commissioner Wu inquired about ground rules on fund raising. Ways to recognize major
gifts were also discussed.
Charles Pow
Commissioners Pow and Minow attended the Palo Alto meeting on the electronic
connection of the City of Palo Alto.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m. to the October 21, 1997 meeting of the Cupertino
Library Commission.

Children's Librarian Bonnie Wang presented a series of Storytimes
in Chinese (Mandarin) on Wednesday evenings: September 10, 17 and 24,
1997 for a total audience of 210:124 children and 86 adults.
Commissioners received copies of the: Introduction to the Internet
for Adults Class flyer, the Cupertino Library Foundation's United Way
information bookmarks, and their new Penny Campaign flyer, the Fine
Arts Commission Grant for Southeast Asian and California Art
bibliography, and the Friends of the Cupertino Library October 18 and 19
Booksale flyer, all of which are available at the library.
