LIB 12-16-97 CUPERTINO LIBRARY COMM"I~ION MINUTES DECEMBER 16, 1997 CAI.L TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Jillian Hamer at 7:30 pm. ROLL CALL Present: Jean Bedord Jillian Hamer Mary Minow Charles Pow Yufen Diana Wu Also present: Susan Fuller, Santa Clara County Librarian Julie Farnsworth, Deputy County Librarian Mary-Ann Wallace, City Librarian MINUTES Minutes of the November 18, 1997 meeting were approved as written. ORAL COMMUNICATION None. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION None. OLD BUSINESS Commission HomePage: Commissioners were asked to list the e-mail address at which they would prefer to receive commission messages. A proposed e- mail address for the cowmlssion is: librarycommission@cupertino.org. The commission has received a write-up on the Cupertino Library Foundation as requested from President Jim Orloff. It was noted that the new city roster of commissions does not include e-mail addresses. Commissioner Pow will follow up on the e-mail discussion with city staff. Library Facility Expansion: Interviews for the selection of the library design consultant will be held the week of January 5, 1998. There are five candidates with good credentials and experience to interview. Commissioners discussed the interview fo~-wat. Deputy County Librarian Julie Farnsworth will write and present the architectural RFP at the next library commission meeting. Library Building Coromlttee: The structure for the library building committee will be discussed tomorrow at a meeting with City Manager Don Brown, Mayor Michael Chang, Public Works Director Bert Viskovich, County Librarian Susan F~dler, Deputy County Librarian J~dle Farnsworth, Cupertino Librarian Mary-Ann Wallace., and Library Commissioners Jillian Hamer and Jean Bedord. ChAirperson Jillian HAmer has been asked to chair the committee. The make-up of the Senior Center building group will be used as a guide NEW BUSINESS None. STANDING REPORTS: Library Foundation: The Foundation held an executive board meeting of the officers in December, but cancelled its regular board meeting. President Jim Orloff, with help from Board members, has been busy sending out the annual mailers. All of the paper, envelope, printing and postage costs were paid for by a recent grant from the California State Library. The Foundation Board has decided to move the regular board meeting from the 3rd Wednesday to the 4th Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm. The next Cupertino Library Foundation Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 1998 at 7:00 pm. Friends of the Library: The Friends have been busy working on a set of bylaws to be presented to the entire group at an upcoming Friends meeting. On Monday, December 8, 1997 a group of approximately 20 members of the Friends got together to wrap over 380 paperback books as gifts for the CCS holiday baskets. Calendar update: CALTAC (California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners) workshop is slated for Saturday, March 7, 1998 at the new Mountain View Public Library. CITY LIRRARIAN'S REPORT Attached. COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT The next JPA meeting will be held Thursday, January 22, 1998. Children's Services Manager Davi Evans will present an Internet Brochure for Parents. There will be two versions of the brochure published. The first will be a short~ te~'m brochure to get the inforwation out to parents, and later in the spring, when the newly designed web page is ready, there will be a final version of the brochure issued that will coordinate with the new web page design. Also at the JPA meeting there will be a presentation on the library's Internet classes cu~-~-icul,,m~ and a discussion of the Library Channel and the Encyclopedia Britannica online. The cd rom stations are close to installation. Each library will get one station with multiple cd roms in a stacker. County Librarian Susan Fuller attended the recent Internet summit in Washington, D.C. along with Assistant County Counsel Ann Ravel. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS and AGENDA BUI~JDINC~: ChAirperson Hamer asked about out of order signs that seem to be posted often on the same couple ofterwinals. Librarian Wallace noted that one teradnal is slated to be removed from the public area until it can be repaired. Other signs are posted on teL'L~'~inals only until the system office can clear the particular problem, which usually happens within a half hour or hour at most. Commissioner Minow reminded the group that the election of officers should be placed on the January agenda. In answer to questions, Commissioner Bedord told the group that things were still uncertain at Dialog / Knight Ridder, since its recent acquisition. Commissioner Pow told the group that he is in the process of contacting the manager of a local bookstore about possible ideas for library support. Commissioner Wu told the group that she is in the process of trying to set up some library staff/cowmlssioner visits to local Chinese schools. She would like any calendar update infor~-r~ation from commissioners by January 5th.
