CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chair Charles Pow.

A letter was received from the Friends of the Library. Lois Woodruffis no longer the
President. The new President is Jean Gallup. Future correspondence should be sent to
The Friends of the Cupertino Library at Cupertino Library, 10400 Torre Avenue,
Cupertino, CA 95014.
The Cupertino City Budget was received by the Commission.

OLD BUSINESS
Library Expansion
The Expansion Committee met on July 8, 1998 and approved city staff proposal for an
expansion cost analysis. The City Council subsequently deferred decision on the proposal
until the first Council meeting in September. Commissioner Hamer will be discussing next
steps with City Manager, Don Brown. Commissioners were encouraged to attend the
Council meeting.
Internet Access
Filtering software was installed on children's room computers on July 27, 1998. The
company Sonic Systems was chosen as a vendor after considerable staffresearch. A
report on the research is available at the reference desks of all the County Libraries.
Computers in the children's rooms are filtered. Computers in the adult room offer a
choice of filtered or unfiltered access. Staffwill not monitor or police use.
Motor Vehicle Tax
A reduction of 25% in the Motor Vehicle Tax will be included in the State budget. The
State will backfill. The Library is concerned about the certainty of backfill in the future.
Volunteers
An annual volunteer report was distributed. Volunteer hours at the Cupertino Library
have increased by 15% over last year.
Standing Reports
Library Foundation
The Foundation has welcomed a new Board Member, Alexis Osanitch, and a former
Board Member, Peter Kalnay, has just rejoined the board. Thelma Epstein, a former
Library Commissioner, was also a guest at the last meeting. The Penny Campaign is still
ongoing. Barnes andNoble is now advertising the Penny Campaign in its monthly
calendar. The next Foundation Board meeting will be held on the 4th Wednesday,
August 26, 1998 at 7:00 pm in the library Story Room.
Friends of the Library
Friends are anticipating the October booksale. The ongoing booksale is very successful.
The Friends authorized $5,000 for a best seller browsing collection. The Friends are
working on signs and publicity to promote the booksaies.
Major's Breakfast
There was no breakfast in August. Commissioner Bedord will attend the September
breakfast.
Calendar Update
The September Libra~ Commission meeting date may need to be changed. Chair Pow
will poll the members.
COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
The All Commission meeting will take place on September 12, 1998 at the Saratoga
Library. It will be held in the morning.' Further details will be sent to commissioners.
Buildings and Friends groups will be the subjects discussed.
A $200,000 gift from Infoseek president, Steve Kirsch has been received. The money will
be used to buy upgraded PCs.

S,~mmer Reading Club signups ended on August 1, and the dub
officially ends (with all certificates and award books picked up by the start of
school) on September 4, 1998. The total number of children who joined the
S~tmmer Reading Club this year is 2,111. To date, 1,132 children have
completed reading 9 or more book.~, or had 9 or more books read to them.. The
majority of SRC members who have finished, have read more than 9 books.
S~mmer Readlug for Teens was also quite successful. This year 108 teens
joined up, and 45 teens received gi~ certificates for reading 5 books and writing
1 book review.
There were 8 Sxlmnter Readlr~g Club progrAm~, 7 of which were
planned and presented by the children's reference st~fl'~ and the 8th was a
perfor,~:ance by Onye Onyemaechi, a Nigerian dr~mmer, who brought and
perfoL-.-ed on many different African do,ms, led the audience in songs and
dances, and let children try out the various insto,ments. This program was
held outside on the plaza, and attracted 185 children and 65 adults. Total
attendance at the 1998 S~,mmer Reading Club program~ was 873.
Cupertino Library thanks The Friends of the Cupertino Library for
funding _all S-miner Reading Club program supplies and other costs, as well as
funding one free paperback book for each child who read 9 or more books over
the s~mmer, and one gi~ certificate to Stacey's, a local bookstore, for each teen
who read 5 or more books over the s,~mmer and who wrote at least one book
review for the library to share with other teens.
