Chair Wu requested that Commissioners review the Commission bgdget and be prepared to make suggestions at the April meeting. Legislative priorities Commissioner Minow suggested that the Commission begin to write as a body to legislators expressing opinions on bills. The Commission concurred and will investigate the city rules for support of legislation. Commissioner Pow moved and Commissioner Gordon seconded that Commissioner Minow be named as the commission's legislative liaison. Approved unanimously. OLD BUSINESS Library expansion Advisory Design Committee Commissioners Pow and Mohan have been appointed. Discussion of Proposed Extending Library Hours Discussion tabled to the April meeting. Standing Reports Library Foundation Officers will be elected at the next meeting, the annual meeting, March 24, 1999. Friends of the Library The last booksale was very successful and raised over $10,000. Mayor's Breakfast Commissioner Mohan attended and sent a report to the Commission. A question was raised about the expansion process and the decision to choose a new building instead of a branch. Commissioners will check with City Manager Don Brown and JPA representative John Statton to clarify issues. Calendar Distribution No changes were reported. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Attached. COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Legislation establishing the "Library of California" was signed by the governor last year with an initial budget of 5 million. The project goal is to connect all California libraries electronically. JPA had an orientation meeting in February. At that meeting the JPA took action endorsing the CAC's prerogative of setting their own meeting schedule. The next JPA Board meeting will be held April 22 in the Quinlan Center. The Board will review the Intemet policy after a year in operation, consider the first draft of the budget and hear a stares report from the City Managers on the building policy. COMMISSIONER'S COMMENTS Commissioner Minow asked to agendize Brown act information that she gathered at the CALTAC forum held March 13, 1999. Chairperson Wu asked if there was interest in exploring the possibility of library exchange with a city in Taiwan. These are more in the continuing series of family programs funded by the Friends of the Cupeflino Library. Commissioners also recieved the flyer on the slate of programs in celebration of National Library Week. The library will host three evening programs: Valerie Lewis of Hicklebee's Children's Books will speak to parents about Best Books for Children on Monday, April 12, 1999 at 7:00 pm; the Family Storytime will feature Special Guest Readers on Tuesday, April 13, 1999 at 7:30 pm; and on Wednesday, April 14, 1999 at 7:00 pm C.J. Critt, a Recorded Books reader will read from selected titles. Children's staff will present a drop-in program for children: Spring Crafts for Kids from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on Thursday, April 15, 1999. All program flyers are available at the library.
