NEW BUSINESS
The commissioners discussed nominating a commissioner for the CALTAC Award to be
given at the Califomia Library Association conference in November. CALTAC is the
California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners.
OLD BUSINESS
Art& Wine Festival participation: Last year the Library Commission, Friends and
Foundation had a booth, where they displayed the drawings done by the architects for the
cost estimation firm on the two sites then in question for the new library. This year, the
groups have decided that at this point in the process, they don't have anything concrete to
present to the community, and have opted not to have a booth. The commissioners will
revisit this topic at the next meeting, if there is any further support for a booth.
_ Standing Repons:
Legislative Update: County Librarian Susan Fuller and Administrative Services Manager
Gay Strand are still working on the ERAF return. The loss of ERAF revenue to Santa
Clara County Library this year alone equals $7,000,000.
Sister Libraries: No activity at this time. Cupertino Children's Librarian Bonnie Wang
will translate one or two of the best folktale renditions later this summer. Commissioner
Wu expects to visit Taiwan by the end of the year, and may take the folktale and art
display with her, when she visits, rather than sending it before that.
Library Foundation: The next meeting of the Library Foundation will be on Monday,
June 26, 2000. The Foundation is still meeting on the 4th Monday rather than on the 4th
Wednesday.
Friends of the Library: The Friends had a successful booksale on May 20th and 21st. The
Friends met on June 12th. The next Friends meeting will be held on July l0th. There will
be no Friends meeting in August.
Mayor's Breakfast: There was no Mayor's Breakfast. Chairperson Mohan was to have
attended. She will attend the next Mayor's Breakfast on July 11th.
Commissioners noted that the new City Manager, Dave Knapp, will begin work on July
10th.
Library Building Steering Committee: Chairperson Sheila Mohan will attend in June.
Commissioner Stakey will plan to attend in July. Commissioner Wu will plan to attend
in August. Commissioners discussed the difficulties of having alternates attend the
meetings, and plan to ask each alternate to keep current on the topics discussed. The
estimate of the time commitment for those serving on the committee is 2 to 3 years. At
the first meeting of the Library Building Steering Committee, it was reported that when
the Library Building Plan was done, the costs per square foot were figured at around
$300, whereas recent construction estimates are now up to $400 to $500 per square foot.
At the next meeting, there will be a discussion of a possible 3rd site for the new library.
Calendar: Commissioner Stakey will update the calendar.

San Francisco Chronicle.
