Chair Moban called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

MINUTES
The minutes of the June 20, 2000 meeting were approved as read.
ORAL COMMUNICATION
City Manager David Knapp visited the meeting and discussed his previous library
construction experience. Commissioners talked to City Manager Knapp about their
views regarding the building process.

Legislative Update

Sister Cities
Commissioner Wu discussed the status of the sister library project. The Commission
suggested that publicity be sought in the Cupertino Courier when Commissioner Wu
travels to Taiwan.

Friends of the Library
The Friends are sponsoring Summer Reading Club activities.
Mayor's Breakfast
Chair Mohan attended the June meeting. Library site selection was discussed.

__ Calendar
The updated Calendar was distributed.
Self Check Out
3M and Dynix worked together to troubleshoot the problems with the self-checkout
machines. Both stations have been working well for the last week. The Express (5 items
or less) checkout line is used at very busy times, primarily Saturday and Sunday
afternoons and Thursday afternoons after the Summer Reading Club programs. The
patrons and staff appreciate the faster service with the Express Check checkout station.
New Library Update
A report was given from the library expansion committee. Concern was expressed about
allowing the committee full participation. Issues needing special attention included
parking and costs. The next meeting of the expansion committee is scheduled for August
16, 2000.

COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
The County Library is still working on the issue of property tax return. A positive result
is probably not possible in this legislative session. The effort will be continued in the
next legislative session.
The Governor vetoed the legislative recommendation to include full funding for the
public Library Fund in the State Budget.
The committee that will administer the Proposition 14 funds has been appointed and soon
will begin writing regulations. It will be possible to apply for funds in approximately one
year.
COMMISSIONER'S COMMENTS
Chair Mohan will investigate changing the August meeting date to accommodate a
presentation on the building site by Council members James and Chang.
Senator Sher was nominated for CALTAC'S Legislator of the Year.
Commissioner Wu was nominated for CALTAC Outstanding Commissioner award.
Commissioner Minow will be attending The Stanford Institute for Libraries in August.
