CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Kathy Stakey called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

MINUTES
The Minutes of the May 15,2001 meeting were approved as written.
ORAL COMMUNICATION
None.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
Commissioners received copies of the CALTAC (California Association of Library
Trustees and Commissioners) newsletter. Commissioners expressed interest in having
former commissioner Mary Minow come to present the CALTAC commissioners
training workshop for them.
NEW BUSINESS
ERAF Bills: County Librarian Susan Fuller gave a status report on the two ERAF Bills.
Both have passed the California State Senate. They will go next to the Assembly Local
Govemment Committee and then on to the Assembly Appropriations Committee. The
Bills have been amended not to take effect until 2003/2004. If the Bills pass the
Assembly, they still will have to be signed by the Governor.
Library Budget: County Librarian Susan Fuller presented a brief overview of the Santa
Clara County Library budget for the library system as a whole, which serves a population
of approximately 400,000 people and receives 3 million annual visits to 9 libraries and
the Bookmobile. She explained that the library is self-supporting, with the property tax

_ and the benefit assessment making up 78% of its revenue, and reminded commissioners
that thc present benefit assessment will sunset in 2005.
OLD BUSINESS
Standing Reports:
Legislative Update: No report other than the ERAF bills report above.
Sister Libraries: Commissioner Yuhfen Diana Wu reported that there would be a trip to
Hsinchu City, Taiwan in coming up in August. A Performing Arts group will be going,
and there are 12 spots for members of the public to go. Commissioner Wu will not be
going this time.
Library Foundation: The next meeting of the foundation will be held tomorrow evening
on Wednesday, June 20, 2001.
Friends of the Library: The next Friends meeting will be held on Monday, July 9, 2001.
Commissioner Janet Riddell attended and reported on the June Mayor's Breakfast.
Commissioner Sheila Mohan will attend the Mayor's Breakfast in July.
Calendar: No changes at this time.
New Library Update: The architectural firm of Simon, Martin-Vegue, Winkelstein,
Moris, or SMWM, has been approved by the City Council and has been hired to design
the new library. The next Library Steering Committee meeting will also be the first
Public Meeting on the new library to be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 from 6 to 8
p.m. at the Quinlan Center.
CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT

COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
The County Joint Powers Authority Board passed the library budget at their June
meeting. They will be meeting again on August 9th to discuss and adopt the revised JPA
agreement.
COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS AND AGENDA BUILDING
Commissioners agreed that the Library Commission presentation to the City Council by
Chairperson Kathy Stakey was very well received.
Both Commissioner Janet Riddell and Commissioner Eno Schmidt will be away in July.
_ Both Chairperson Kathy Stakey and Commissioner Sheila Mohan will be away in
August.
Currently, it seems that there will be a quorum for the July meeting.
