LIB 11-20-01 City of Cupertino Library Commission City HaH November 20, 2001 7:30PM 1. Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Chair Stakey. 2. Roll Call Present K. Stakey E. Schmidt J. Riddell D. Wu Absent S. Mohan Minutes of Last Meeting Minutes approved as read. 4. Oral Communication None 5. Written Communications Email was read from member of the public asking why a new library is needed. Chair Stakey will reply pointing out that a 71% public vote supported the project. 6. New Business , Commission discussed attending the Cupertino City Council meeting inaugurating the new mayor. · Commission discussed ways to develop more media coverage on library and building issues. 7. Old Business · Legislative Update See County Librarians report on ERAF Sister Library Commissioner Wu will be visiting Taiwan in the next few weeks. She will visit sister library and commissioners encouraged trying to maintain ongoing relationship. Friends of Library Annual mailing went out to community in November. Responses are starting to be received. Mayor's Breakfast Chair Stakey reported on Mayor's breakfast Commissioner Wu will attend December meeting. Commissioner Sehmidt will attend January meeting. · Calendar Discussion No Changes. 8. City of Cupertino Librarian's Report New Library Update · Staff working with architects on building interiors. Staff is very pleased with responsiveness of the architects. o County Librarian Report Joint Powers Authority will meet on November 29 to study process of renewing the l~rary assessment. State Library Consultant Richard Hall will speak. Self-Check machines will be installed by early January. Senator Jackie Speier wants to pursue ERAF legislation and staffwill be working with the project. Library asked Coun.qel to review Patriot's Act for issues affecting library. 10. The classes will be kept to a maximum of 5 students, and are open to the first 5 people who sign up at the adult reference desk at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday mornings. There have been 4 Saturday opportunities so far for drop-in classes. On October 27th, the drop-in class had 2 attendees. There haven't been people showing up for the classes since then, but staff will continue to offer the opportunity each Saturday morning. Staff members are happy to offer these small, personalized classes for our library users, as we offer the twice-weekly tours/online catalog demonstrations. One Intemet class in Mandarin Chinese has also been held. The classes in Mandarin Chinese must be scheduled in advance through the adult reference desk. The travel slide program on Rajasthan - Land of Kings, held last evening, had 15 people in attendance. Those who attended enjoyed the panoramic views that were provided by the simultaneous use of two slide projectors. Children's Librarians are planning a Harry Potter Trivia program on Thursday afternoon, December 27th. There will be no storytimes during the last week of December and the first week in January. Storytimes will begin again the week of January 7th.
