MINUTES
There were a couple of typos in the Minutes. Commissioner Riddell's name was
misspelled on pages 3 and 4. Also noted under the Library Foundation report: Foundation
President Dorothy Stow had reported at the last Foundation meeting on a training
workshop that she had attended on running a capital campaign. Commissioners thought
that the way in which it was stated in the Minutes could be confusing. Foundation
President Stow was not at the library commission meeting, reporting on the training, but
had done the presentation at the last Foundation meeting. With these corrections, the
Minutes of the February 19, 2002 meeting were approved as amended.

NEW BUSINESS
Chairperson Wu will give the next report to the City Council during public comments on
library highlights and successes. One of the highlights is the collection of framed
artwork created by students in the elementary grades in our Sister Library in Hsinchu
City, Taiwan recently received by the library, along with 25 books in Chinese on festivals
that will be added to the Cupertino Library collection. The framed artwork will soon be
on display in the Children's Room of the Cupertino Library. Chairperson Wu wants to be
sure that the City is apprised of this gift, as a delegation from Cupertino will be going to
Hsinchu City in April or May.
Chairperson Wu reminded commissioners of the Library Issues Breakfast to be held on
April 27, 2002. This is the annual breakfast for local government officials and
community leaders, sponsored jointly by the Peninsula Library System and the Silicon
Valley Library System. This year's topic is the Joint San Jose Public and San Jose State
University Library - the first of its kind!
OLD BUSINESS
Standing Reports:
Legislative Update: County Librarian Susan Fuller reported that petitions are coming in
from the Friends groups to be sent to Senator Speier's office and in turn to the governor
to support the return of ERAF funds to the Special District Libraries.
Sister Libraries: Commissioner Wu reported that she has received twelve framed
artworks and gift books from the Hsinchu City Library, as reported under New Business.
The art will soon be on display in the library, and the books in Chinese will become part
of the Cupertino Library children's book collection.
New Library Update: Commissioners discussed the Building Community meeting, held
earlier today at the Senior Center. They want to be sure that the Teen Area and the Teen
Group Study Room in the new library are large enough to meet the needs of teens in our
community. Commissioners are also concerned about the overall size of the library.
While they are very aware of the budget constraints, they would have preferred a larger
building. Commissioners want as large a library as possible, given the extraordinary
usage by the community. Adequate parking for the new Library, as well as for the
Community Hall, Caf6, and other events planned for the plaza area is also paramount.
Library Foundation: The foundation is organizing for the upcoming capital campaign.
The next meeting of the foundation board will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2002.
Friends of the Library: The Friends slate of officers for this year is: Kathie Mulvey,
President; Judy Scharpen, Vice President; Rose Seay, Secretary; Kathy Stakey,
Treasurer; Gladys Malden, Book Sale Chairperson; Donna Van Schaack, Hospitality
Chairperson; Julie Goodman, Membership Chairperson; Colin Jung, Publicity
Chairperson. Jean Gallup will serve as Newsletter Editor, a non-elected Board position.
The next Friends membership meeting will be held on Monday, April 1, 2002. The
Friends now meet on the first Monday of the month.
Mayor's Breakfast: Commissioner Schmidt attended and reported on the Mayor's
Breakfast in March. Commissioner Stakey will attend the Mayor's Breakfast in April.
Calendar: Commissioner Schmidt sent out the calendar electronically before the meeting.
CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT

COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
County Librarian Fuller reported that both the Gilroy and Morgan Hill libraries and cities
are working on the voluminous Proposition 14 applications for the June deadline. The
city of Milpitas is conducting a needs assessment survey. The next JPA Board Meeting
will be on April 25, 2002.
COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS AND AGENDA BUILDING
Commissioners discussed the recent CALTAC (California Association of Library
Trustees and Commissioners) workshop. Commissioner Wu said that one of the speakers
was Mayor Judy Nadler of Santa Clara City. She had served on the library commission
there for 8 years before becoming mayor. Santa Clara City is currently building an 80,000
sq. ft. Library, which at $42 million dollars, is the largest single project in the city's
history.
Commissioner Schmidt noted that one of the things that the speakers stressed was not to
be shy about asking for support for the library.
A video was shown during the workshop that commissioners thought was done very well.
It had been done as a class project at San Mateo Community College for the Redwood
City Library Foundation. Commissioner Wu would like to show it at an upcoming
commission meeting as an example of another way to get the library's message out to the
community.
Commissioner Riddell handed out copies of an article on ergonomic checkout desks.
