LIB 04-16-02 CUPERTINO LIBRARY COMMISSION MINUTES April 16, 2002 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Yuhfen Diana Wu called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Janet Riddell Eno Schmidt Kathy Stakey Yuhfen Diana Wu Also present: Away with prior notice: Mary-Ann Wallace, City Librarian Carol Atwood, Director of Administrative Services Sheila Mohan Susan Fuller, Santa Clara County Librarian MINUTES With the change in officers, it is now Commissioner Riddell, who sends out the calendar electronically to commissioners, not Commissioner Schmidt. With this correction, the Minutes of the March 19, 2002 meeting were approved as amended. ORAL COMMUNICATION None. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION None. NEW BUSINESS Chairperson Wu showed a video that had been done by Allen Mueller as a class project at San Mateo Community College for the Redwood City Library Foundation on its projects. Commissioner Wu cited the film as an example of another way to get the library's message out to the community, and suggested that it might be a good idea for the future. With the upcoming capital campaign, all three library support groups: Commission, Foundation, and Friends will be helping in some way, and commissioners would like to invite the chairs of these groups and of the capital campaign to future meetings. Commissioners talked of the need to fundraise over the next year. They understand that the foundation will be taking the lead in the campaign. Carol Atwood asked if the ideas for fundraising for the various aspects of the new library have been catalogued in any way. Librarian Wallace said that a committee of the foundation has been working on a list of possible naming opportunities. Commissioners also discussed the role of the commission in the planning process for the new library. There are seats on the Steering Committee for a Commission member and a Friends member, but the committee has not met in some time, and won't be meeting soon enough to keep commissioners apprised of progress. Chairperson Wu will contact either Ralph Qualls or Terry Greene about their concerns. Commissioners want to be informed and want to contribute input as the process continues. The commission would also like to have the opportunity to give input as to what they might like to see in the temporary library as to size, location, and services offered. Commissioner Riddell has presented ideas and articles on what to do and what not to do in the new library, based on Mountain View Library's experience. Commissioners want to be sure that this information is taken into consideration in planning the new library, and that the new library includes "green" building elements. The commission would like to form a task force with two of its members plus Friends and Foundation members to be sure that they are directly informed and included in the planning process for the new library, as well as for the temporary library. OLD BUSINESS Standing Reports: Legislative Update: No report. Sister Libraries: Commissioner Wu reported that she has talked to other city facilities about displaying the twelve framed artworks from Hsinchu City Library after they have been on display in the Cupertino Library. There will be a professionally produced sign over the art work in both English and Chinese that can be used at the library and at the other locations. Commissioner Stakey will work on getting the sign done locally. Commissioners also discussed the possibility of using the artwork in a calendar. New Library Update: Commissioners want to continue to be informed and have the opportunity to contribute input on the new library as it progresses. Library Foundation: The next meeting of the foundation board will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2002. Friends of the Library: The next Friends membership meeting will be held on Monday, May 6, 2002. Carol Atwood commented on what a wonderful selection of books the Friends have been putting out for purchase in the ongoing lobby book sale. Commissioner Stakey will pass the compliment on to Judy Scharpen, who oversees the lobby sale selections. Mayor's Breakfast: Commissioner Stakey attended and reported on the Mayor's Breakfast for April. One upcoming highlight is that Mayor Lowenthal and a delegation from the city will visit Hsinchu City. Commissioner Stakey will purchase a couple of books that the Mayor can present to the Hsinchu City Library as the first of a selection of gift books that our Friends of the Cupertino Library will fund for the Hsinchu City Library in return for the books that they have sent to our library. Commissioner Wu will attend the Mayor's Breakfast in May. Calendar: Commissioner Riddell sent out the calendar electronically before the meeting. Commissioners added the Legislative Breakfast on April 27, 2002, the Teen Job Faire also on April 27, 2002, and the presentation to the Teen Commission on May 6, 2002. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Attached. COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT City Librarian Wallace shared a letter written by County Librarian Susan Fuller to the Joint Powers Authority Board Members and to Santa Clara County Library Staff on the recent death of former County Librarian George Farrier. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS AND AGENDA BUILDING Commissioner Riddell shared an article by Joan Frye Williams from the April 2002 American Libraries, entitled Shaping the "Experience Library", about the new Cerritos Public Library in southern California. Commissioners are interested in having a presentation on the Q andA Cafd and virtual reference at the next commission meeting. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned to Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at 7:30 p.m. Note: The Minutes are unapproved until the following Cupertino Library Commission meeting, where any corrections are noted. Respectfully submitted, Mary-Ann Wallace Community Library Supervisor Cupertino Library
