LIB 07-16-02- CUPERTINO LIBRARY COMMISSION MINUTES July 16, 2002 CALL TO ORDER Vice Chairperson Eno Schmidt called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Sheila Mohan Janet Riddell Eno Schmidt Kathy Stakey Away with Prior Notice: Yuhfen Diana Wu Also present: Julie Famsworth, Deputy County Librarian Mary-Ann Wallace, City Librarian MINUTES The Minutes of the May 21, 2002 meeting were approved as written. The Minutes of the June 18, 2002 meeting were approved as written. ORAL COMMUNICATION None. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION The Commission received an email from Marsha Manzo, Chairperson of the Saratoga Library Commission regarding commission activities connected with Saratoga's relocation and temporary building, as well as community fundraising. NEW BUSINESS Commissioners Janet Riddell and Eno Schmidt, members of the Cupertino Library Commission Committee for the Relocation of Cupertino Library will meet tomorrow morning, July 17, 2002 with City of Cupertino staff members Ralph Qualls, Director of Public Works and with Terry Greene, Senior Architect to include their input in the committee report. Committee members also thanked Deputy County Librarian Julie Farnsworth for her contributions to the report, and will meet with City Librarian Wallace on Friday, July 19, 2002 to include her input. The final report will be presented to the city. Deputy County Librarian Julie Farnsworth told the Commissioners about recruiting efforts for the County Librarian post, soon to be open on Susan Fuller's retirement. Notices have already gone out within California and will soon go out nationwide in such ROLL CALL Present: library publications as American Libraries and Library Journal. The County Librarian is hired by Santa Clara County Executive Richard Wittenberg. The application process closes by mid September. By the end of October, the interviews will be held, and reference checks will be completed in November. The announcement of the new County Librarian should be out around the beginning of December. Librarian Wallace gave commissioners updated information on city commission meeting attendance from City Clerk Kim Smith. OLD BUSINESS Standing Reports: Legislative Update: No report. Sister Libraries: Commissioner Stakey reported that she met with Commissioner Wu and with Librarian Judith Blight. The Friends of the Cupertino Library funded the purchase of books to be sent as a gift to the Hsinchu City Library in return for their recent gift of books for Cupertino Library. Commissioner Stakey delivered the books to Library Commission liaison Carol Atwood for mailing to Hsinchu City. The artwork that has been on display in the library will be taken down and stored until a new city venue for display can be coordinated. Library Foundation: The next meeting of the foundation board will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2002. The Foundation held a meeting also on July 10, 2002 to work on preparations for the upcoming capital campaign. Friends of the Library: The next Friends membership meeting will be held on Monday, September 9, 2002. Commissioner Stakey reported that the Friends do not want to continue either the on-going lobby sale or the 3 annual booksales, while the library is in the temporary building. They are looking forward to a break, and will start up again in the new library. Mayor's Breakfast: Commissioner Riddell attended and reported on the Mayor's Breakfast for July. Commissioner Stakey will attend the Mayor's Breakfast in August. Calendar: Commissioner Riddell sent out the calendar electronically before the meeting. Commissioners added the County Librarian's retirement dinner on September 19, 2002 to the calendar. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Attached. COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Deputy County Librarian Julie Farnsworth reported for County Librarian Susan Fuller, who is recovering from recent minor surgery. There will be a special JPA meeting in August to approve technology purchases. The Public Library Fund had been cut from the Governor's budget and then partially restored. However, even with partial funding, Santa Clara County Library will still see a $200,000 cut in PLF revenue. There has been a 17% increase in circulation among the Santa Clara County Libraries. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS AND AGENDA BUILDING Commissioner Riddell passed out an article on the Children's Intemet Protection Act (CIPA). Commissioners would like to have a presentation on the Q and A Caf6 at the November meeting.
