Director stated, "At the council meeting of June 6, City Council did adopt as submitted the
recommendations from the Task Force and Parks and Recreation Commission regarding the interim
use of Fremont Older with one exception. Rather than waiting for completion of construction to re-
name the park site, Council wanted the Commission to begin the process now so by the time the park
was completed everyone in the community would be adjusted to the name. Tonight we are not deciding
the name, we are simply deciding the process. I gave you four options that are not inclusive. If you
have other options you would like to put on the table, that is fine." Director reviewed the four options.
"The issue before the Commission this evening is to decide what would be a reasonable approach. It
was turned back to the chair.
Chairman Hendrickson opened it up to the audience and reported that correspondence was received by
the Commission from the Historical Society, signed by James Gilmore. There were no comments from
the audience. It was brought back to the Commission for the comments.

Re-naming

Commissioner Lohmiller said, "As chair of the Fremont Older Interim Use Task Force, I think we need
to be sensitive to the surrounding area. I like the idea of it being a historical name. I like the idea of it
having some significance to the roots of Cupertino and I like the idea of having public input."
Commissioner Buhler said, "I actually liked options #2 and/t3. It seems to be appropriate that the Task
Force have an opportunity to participate in selecting the name. I also think the input from the Historical
Society is a good idea. My thought is that the input should be directed back to the Task Force."
Commissioner Hopkins said, "I thought it would be nice to have a historical name associated with the
park and I think the Cupertino Historical Society would be an ideal organization to come up with a few
names and bring it before the Commission. I also like the idea of getting input from the public as well,
so if we can combine those two together I think that would work out well.
Chairman Hendrickson stated, "The Fremont Older Interim Task Force that Commissioner Lohmiller
led and that I also sit on can do all those things. I think the historical part can come, as you suggested,
through the Task Force and go ahead and make its recommendation to this body and then be forwarded
to Council for their decision. Out of the four options, from what I've heard, I think we are looking at
#2 and #3. I'd like to get consensus for staff on which way we would recommend to go."
Commissioner Buhler made a motion that we adopt option #2 (Refer the renaming of the park back to
the Task Force when they reconvene later this Fall and let them develop suggestions that the
Commission would act upon) and refer input from the Cupertino Historical Society to the Task Force
for their consideration. Commissioner Lohmiller seconded the motion.
Commissioner Hopkins said, "The only thing I would like to add to that is that if the Commission
agrees, I still would like to see a historical aspect to the name. It could be referred to the Task Force
with a recommendation from the Commission that they would look towards naming somebody from
Cupertino's past."
Commissioner Buhler added, "I prefer to leave it to the discretion of the Task Force and let them
consider this recommendation and any other recommendations that they might solicit from the
Historical Society. I just prefer to leave it more general."
Commissioner Lohmiller said, "I would be inclined to go along with Luis on that. The Task Force is
heavily staffed with people that live in that area that are very sensitive to that, which I think is a very
good thing. They are very broad minded people in the whole interim process. I feel comfortable with
the Task Force taking this on. It's an opportunity for public input."
Commission voted: All in favor. Unanimously approved.
8. Continued item #8 until a future meeting. (Recommendation from McClellan Ranch Task Force
regarding Ropes Course).
