Regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission called to order at 7:03 p.m. SALUTE TO THE FLAG 2. ROLL CALL 3. Commissioners present: Staff present: Hopkins, James, Lohmiller, Jelinch, Stein Stephen Dowling, Director of Parks and Recreation Linda Lagergren, Recording Secretary ORAL COMMUNICATIONS 4. None UNFINISHED BUS1NESS - 5. None NEW BUSINESS 6. Director gave a status report on the Stevens Creek Trail preferred route. He stated that we now have funding to hire a consultant to begin the feasibility study of the work being done by the task force on Stevens Creek Trail. The Director reviewed the proposed plan of Reach 1, 2 and 3. "The work of the ' task force will be to take each of these reaches and with the consultant evaluate the true feasibility of each of these segments. When the task force has completed the feasibility study than it will come back to the commission for recommendation. We expect to start up this project in the fall. Chair Hopkins is the representative to the Stevens Creek Trail Task Force". 7. Chair Hopkins volunteered to be the representative on the Cultural Event Committee. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING 8. Commissioner Lohmiller moved and Commissioner James seconded the motion to approve the minutes of the June 5, 1997 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting as submitted. Commissioner's Jelinch and Stein abstained. All others in favor. Motion carried. 9. Commissioner James moved and Commissioner Lohmiller seconded the motion to approve the minutes of the July 10, 1997 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting as submitted. All in favor. Motion carried. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS 10. Commission reviewed letter from the Spiritual Assembly of the Bah'is of Cupertino proposing to establish and maintain a rose garden in Cupertino. The director of Parks and Recreation and the director of Public Works will set up a meeting with the group to get an understanding of the proposal. Commissioners felt that the Senior Center would be a good location for a rose garden, however, if there was a political motive behind this or if it had symbolism to one group then the city should not participate. Director reviewed recreation program highlights that occurred in the month of July (Fireworks, Shakespeare in the Park, Summer Concert Series). 12. Commissioner James reported on the Chamber's Art and Wine Festival and Shakespeare in the Park. MISCELLANEOUS 13. There was no legislative update. 14. The mayor's breakfast meeting was cancelled for the months of July and August. 15. Director informed commissioners that they would be receiving invitations to the Senior Volunteer Luncheon. 16. Director reported that there would be a town hall meeting in late September for teens to identify issues and to get volunteers for the Task Force. ADJOURNMENT 17.
