Regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission called to order at 7:03 p.m. SALUTE TO THE FLAG 2. ROLL CALL 3. Commissioners present: Staff present: Hopkins, Lohmiller, Shaikh, Stein and Chairman Jelinch Stephen Dowling, Director of Parks and Recreation Pamela Eggen, Recording Secretary Michael O'Dowd, Recreation Supervisor Jackie Stone, Recreation Coordinator ORAL COMMUNICATIONS 4. Chairman Jelinch mentioned a reported complaint regarding a Creekside Park flooding on the soccer field. He stated the problem was solved by repairing a malfunctioned valve. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 5. None. NEW BUSINESS 6. Michael O'Dowd, Recreation Supervisor for Blackberry Farm, presented an overview of Blackberry Farm operations highlighting areas of growth and improvements since the city took ownership. Jackie Stone, Recreation Coordinator, presented the Retreat Center information regarding conferences and the amenities that are provided. She stated the conference room can be reserved for as many as 25 people and mentioned the center includes a wide variety of catered meals such as breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks, and all day beverages. The Commissioners toured the grounds of Blackberry Farm, noting the restrooms that had recently been remodeled. The Commissioners also made note of the areas where improvements are needed, such as the main parking lot in need of new pavement and new bridges to be reconstructed. Director Dowling pointed out the highlights of the community survey: City of Cupertino - Level of satisfaction is relatively high · Parks and Recreation Department - Very satisfied - 70% · Teen Center - 72% would like a teen center (Teen Task Force is considering this concept) · Two/Thirds of respondents felt the cost of recreation classes were reasonable · Commissioner Lohmiller suggested that before class fees are raised, current users should be surveyed Approved Call to order Salute to Flag Roll Call Blackberry Farm Community Survey 10. 11. 12. Page 2 Commissioner Hopkins moved and Commissioner Lohmiller seconded the motion to approve the minutes of the April 2, 1998 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting as submitted. All in favor. Motion carried. None Director Dowling reviewed the Monthly Report mentioning how successful Cupertino Day at Blackberry Farm was. He also said, despite the rain, 170 people showed up for the Big Bunny Fun Run. Commissioner Lohmiller spoke on issues relating to the Teen Task Force meeting held April 29, 1998. Teen Task He said recreational needs were discussed as well as social needs. Force Director Dowling mentioned the consultant's strategy was to do a survey regardi,~g the needs of all the teens in Cupertino. He said they were planning on getting the survey done before the end of the school year. Commissioner Hopkins mentioned the Cultural Events Committee decision to hold an international Cultural food and films event in January or February of 1999. Events 13. None 14. None 15.
