Regular meeting &the Parks and Recreation Commission called to order at 7:06 p.m. SALUTE TO THE FLAG 2. ROLL CALL 3. Commissioners present: Commissioners absent: Staff present: ORAL COMMUNICATIONS 4. None. Hopkins, Lohmiller, Shaikh, and Chairman Jelinch Vice Chairperson Stein Stephen Dowling, Director of Parks and Recreation Pamela Eggen, Recording Secretary UNFINISHED BUSINESS 5. None. NEW BUSINESS Director Dowling summarized the results of the Teen Task Force Advisory Committee pointing out the following highlights: · Train teens as facilitators and let them facilitate the discussion groups · Include all sectors of the teen population in the discussion groups: distinguish among age groups; Junior and Senior High students; those who like and are active in school activities and those who do not and are not; those who have cars and who do not; the different needs of boys and girls · Identify and reach groups with special needs, including truants, teen moms, etc. · Have both homogeneous and heterogeneous discussion groups · Supplement discussion groups with a survey · Use the research that has been done about what other cities are doing · Include parents as stakeholders · Hold the discussion groups in a neutral, safe environment and be open to hearing all of the "needs" of teens · Use the Internet as a way of giving teens information and getting feedback · At this time, be open to ali possibilities in terms of activities, programs, or facilities that might be recommended through this process Mr. Dowling stated the PDC will conduct a comprehensive needs assessment in September at the high schools, every teen that attends school will be surveyed in this effort. He stated this would provide the foundation for the 10 focus groups. PRC #200 Approved Call to order Salute to Flag Roll Call Teen Task Forc~ 7. Commissioner Shaikh moved to approve the minutes of July 9, 1998 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting as submitted. All in favor. Motion carried. 8. None. 9. Mr. Dowling reviewed the July Monthly Report. 10. None 11. None. 12. Mr. Dowling mentioned the second renovation of Jollyman Park. Mr. Dowling stated Request for Proposals were mailed for the Four Seasons Comer project. 13. Chairman Jelinch moved to adjourn at 7:37 p.m. to the regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission on Thursday, September 3, 1998, 7:00 p.m. at the Cupertino Sports Center, 21111 Stevens Creek Boulevard.
