NEW BUSINESS
Director Dowling summarized the background history of the Cupertino Sports Center. Don McCarthy,
Recreation Supervisor, presented the following information regarding the Sports Center facility:
Fiscal Objectives
To be self-supporting
· Operational costs: $700,000
· Resurface tennis courts and add a new roof
Programs/Services
· Racquetball
· Pro-shop (new) and beverage bar
· Specialty camps, mainly tennis. Tennis instruction generates most income
Leases/Partnerships
· DACA (De Anza Cupertino Aquatics) generated $1,400 last summer. Leasing works best.
· Parent/Tot Programs
· Specialized Programs/Sports
· REACH - full service - personal training
· Lifetime Tennis a good revenue program (Since 1994)
Vision
· Redesign center (dining room area)
· Need to expand fitness area
· Roof needs repair
· Passes are 100% equity
After reviewing the above information, Mr. McCarthy conducted the tour of the Sports Center.

Commissioner Lohmiller moved to approve the minutes of August 6, 1998 Parks and Recreation Motion
Commission meeting as submitted. All in favor. Motion carried.

8. Director Dowling reviewed August Monthly Report.
9. Commissioner Lohmiller stated Cupertino Community Services would be holding an auction B-B-Q. on
September 12th at Blackberry Farm.
10. None.
11. Mr. Dowling mentioned that Chris Beth, Recreation Coordinator, had been appointed as Recreation
Supervisor with the City of San Bruno.
Mr. Dowling informed the commissioners of the selection of architect, Mark Schatz, BSA, for the
Senior Center expansion. Steve said the programming phase would begin in about two weeks.

13. Commissioner Shaikh moved to adjourn at 7:58 p.m. to the regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation
Commission on Thursday, October 1, 1998, 7:00 p.m. at Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue,
Cupertino, California 95014. All in favor. Motion passed.
