P&R 06-06-02 APPROVED MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION CITY OF CUPERTINO REGULAR MEETING THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 2002 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Peng called the regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission to order at 7 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL Commissioners present: Commissioners absent: Rod Brown, Frank Jelinch, Roger Peng, Kris Wang Jeanne Bradford Staff present: Therese Ambrosi Smith, Julia Lamy, Joan Spitsen, Marie Preston, Kimberly Smith, City Clerk Others: Cupertino Fine Arts Commission MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING - April 11, 2002 minutes approved as corrected. SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS 1. Joan Spitsen, Recreation Coordinator for the Senior Center's travel program, discussed many of the trips she has organized over the years along with several anecdotal stories. She has been managing this extremely popular program for 13 years. Barbara Phelps, Vice Chair to the Fine Arts Commission, gave a PowerPoint presentation showing five pieces of art and their potential placements on city parklands. She gave a brief overview of the public art program and the process for artwork acquisition. Potential sites for artwork are: Quinlan Community Center, Memorial Park, Senior Center, Sports Center, City Hall, and Jollyman Park. These sites were selected because of their high profile that provide visual identity to the city. The Fine Arts Commission will be presenting this report to the City Council. Stevens Creek Trail - Review of the Draft Feasibility Report Commissioner Brown recused himself. By way of a PowerPoint presentation, Therese gave an overview of the proposed Stevens Creek Trail and the steps that have been taken to develop the Stevens Creek Trail draft feasibility report. The report is posted in its entirety on the city's website. The commission expressed the interest in touring the proposed trail. A regular adjourned meeting will be set up for Tuesday, June 11, 6 p.m. and Therese will drive the commissioners to various locations. NEW BUSINESS - None MISCELLANEOUS - NO ACTION REQUIRED 4. Staff Oral Reports: - Blackberry Farm Master Plan Update - Therese reported that Public Dialogue Consortium will manage nine focus groups and report their visions for the Stevens Creek corridor. With this information, Godbe Research & Analysis will develop a community-wide phone survey later this summer. The commission should receive the results of that survey in September. Sports Center - Therese reported that the City Council will be taking final action on the Capital Improvement Projects budget at their June 17 meeting. The Sports Center remodeling project is currently at $2.4 million. This budget will allow the building to be brought up to code. Once funding is set, staff will be able to work on interior details. This project will come to the commission again in October. Legislative Update - None Community Contacts - None ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Peng adjourned the meeting to Tuesday, June 11, at 6 p.m., City Hall for a tour of some of the Stevens Creek Trail alignments.
