PSC 09-14-06 CUPEIQ"INO MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CUPERTINO PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION September 14, 2006 The meeting was called to order at 7:14 p.m. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Charles Caldwell, Jay Cena, Hugh Riddell, Nina Daruwalla, Fari Aberg Commissioners Absent: Staff Present: Others Present: Even months staffed; odd months not staffed Dan Dunlap, Santa Clara County Fire Department Captain Terry Calderone, Santa Clara County Sheriffs Department ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS - None APPROVAL OF MINUTES OLD BUSINESS Deferred to next meeting 1. Approved Commission Goals The commissioners discussed the currently approved goals (Fostering Community Outreach and Surveying the Community on Public Safety Concerns) and agreed that the goals should be kept to a small number that were manageable, thereby giving the greatest chances for achieving progress. 2. Community Survey The Commissioners decided that the Survey task force would be composed of commissioners Aberg and Cena. Commissioner Aberg noted that she had spoken to Bicycle Pedestrian Commission (BPC) Chair May Koski about becoming involved in the Survey. She hoped that the Public Safety Commission could gain insight from the BPC's experience with its previous bicycling and walking participation survey of Cupertino school students. Commissioner Cena wondered if ajoint meeting of the Public Safety and Bicycle Pedestrian commissions might be in order. 3. Cupertino Safety Day - October 7 Commissioner Aberg discussed some of the preparation made for the event. A short discussion ensued. NEW BUSINESS 4. PSC web page A discussion ensued regarding the efficacy of a PSC web page on the City's website. 5. Notification of City Council that PSC has decided to conduct monthly meetings. The commissioners noted that the Council should be informed of the PSC's decision to meet every month and approved a motion to do so. REPORTS Santa Clara County Fire District Battalion Chief Dan Dunlap distributed the monthly report and indicated that there weren't any significant events to report other than an increase in call yolume. Dunlap mentioned his previous invitation to the commissioners to conduct a future meeting at the Seven Springs Station. Santa Clara County Sheriff Captain Terry Calderone reviewed the sheriff report. He also reviewed the report in relation to crimes such as robberies, burglaries, auto theft, vandalism, and assaults. Also, he noted that the minimum age for squad car ridealongs is 16 years.
