CALL TO ORDER
Commissioner Sachs called the meeting to order at 6:15 pm at the Quinlan
Community Center, 10185 N. Stelling Road, Cupertino, CA 95014.

NEW BUSINESS
a) City Clerk, Kim Smith- Brown Act: Commissioners heard an overview of the
Brown Act for which their commission is held to
b) Select a liaison to the Public Safety Commission: Commissioners Pommier and
Szeto volunteered to serve as co-liaisons to the PSC.
c) Giving Tree preliminary discussion and action plan: Commissioners will contact
school administration to receive approval for gift collecting bins. Tentative
plans to prepare gift bins on November 11th
d) YAC Social discussion: Commission reviewed the activities of the Social, and
how other groups received the t-shirt challenge idea
e) Tobacco Prevention
a. Keynote speaker: Margarita Mendoza shared with the group how the
interviewing of Rene Hicks went over, confirming that she is the
selected Keynote speaker for YAC Attack
b. Update on challenge details: t-shirt color and design requirements were
adjusted upon the request of other city staff advisors
c. How to keep participating comrnissions/ groups on task: Commissioners
will be emailing participating commissions in November to check on
their statuses.
d. Brainstorm workshop topics and track ideas: Commissioners selected the
following categories that interested them for potential workshops.
Life Skills- Tolerance of Failure, How To Say No, How to Deal with
Parental Pressures
Special Events- Lounge Nights, Giving Tree, WOW
Health and Wellness- Tobacco Use, Alcohol and Drug Effects, Hygiene,
Depression, Sleep Deprivation, Doctor, Testimonial
Charities- Make A Wish, Prosthetic Foundation, Kiva, Heart/ Lung
Cancer, American Cancer Society, Unicef
Debate- Abortion, Gay Marriage, Environmental Ethics, Nuclear
Disarming, Illegal Downloading, Don't Ask Don't Tell, Dream Act,
Defense of Marriage Act, Death Penalty
OLD BUSINESS
a) Teen Center event update: Commissioners Ding and Szeto reminded group
about the event scheduled for October 29`h
b) Teen Center promotion update: Commissioner gave an update on ideas and
actions they've taken to promote the Teen Center
MISCELLANEOUS—NO ACTION REQUIRED
a) Retail License discussion at Nov. 1 City Council Meeting: Margarita Mendoza
shared background information with commission
b) Project Cornerstone Nominations: Commissioners were reminded of nomination
opportunity

At 8:09 pm the Teen Commission adjourned to a REGULAR MEETING on
Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 6:15 pm to be held at the Quinlan Community
Center.
