Quinlan Community Center, Conference Room CUPERTINO 10185 North Stelling Road, Cupertino CA 95014 APPROVED MINUTES CALL TO ORDER Commissioner Do called the meeting to order at 6:17 pm at the Quinlan Community Center, 10185 N. Stelling Roacl, Cupertino, CA 95014 PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Yip, Pommier, Lujack, Szeto, Hemmady, Do, Sachs Commissioners Tardy: Ding, Puranik Staff Present: Neff MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS MEETING Regular meeting, September 28, 2011 Motion to Approve: Sachs; Second Motion: Ding; Passed Unanimously COMMUNICATIONS a) Oral- Commissioners Do shared information form monthly Mayors Meeting. Particular interest in discussion with Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission in regards to a spring time event promoting bikes. b) Written- A California Youth Advocacy Network tobacco prevention mini - grant opportunity was shared discussed. Commissioners agreed this item would not be an appropriate project to assume during an already busy term. NEW BUSINESS a) Oath of Office- Kirsten Squarcia b) Chair and Vice Chair voting- Commissioner Sachs was elected as Chair; Commissioner Ding was elected as Vice Chair for the 2011 -2012 term. c) Andy Huang, Public Safety Chair - AlertSCC budget- Mr. Huang shared a brief background of the AIetSCC program. The concept to double Cupertino's enrollment in the program is the goal of the Public Safety Commission. Mr. Huang consulted with the teen commission on the plan to encourage students at eleven Cupertino schools to enroll and boost the participation by using iDevises as prizes. d) Tobacco Prevention Grant Work 1. Review and assign presentation for YAC Attack Social - commissioners assumed speaking responsibilities in preparation for Friday's YAC Social. 2. T -shirt design update- commissioners heard an update on a printed PSA t -shirt design to showcase at Friday's YAC Social. 3. "Challenge" flyer update - comrnissioners reviewed flyer for distribution at Friday's YAC Social. OLD BUSINESS a) Teen Center event update- commissioners received posters and flyers for promotion at their schools and to share with peers. b) Teen Center promotion update- cornmissioners generated individual ideas to encourage attendance at the teen center. Each commissioner shared their idea, a group discussion occurred, and a follow up agenda item was planned for October 26 MISCELLANEOUS —NO ACTION REQUIRED a) Halloween movie volunteer opportunity, October 28 - commissioners were reminded of a volunteer opportunity to assist recreation staff at the Halloween movie event. ADJOURNMENT At 8:10 pm the Teen Commission adjourned to a REGULAR MEETING on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 6:15 pm to be held at the Quinlan Community Center.
