LIB 04-06-2011 City of Cupertino Library Commission Regular Meeting April 6, 2011 1. CALL TO ORDER At 7:03 p.m. Chair Stevenson called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue, EOC, Cupertino. 2. ROLL CALL Commissioners: Adrian Kolb, Ron Miller, Ann Stevenson, Susanna Tsai, Rose Grymes (arrived 7:13) City /County Library Staff Liz Nunez„ Melinda Cervantes, Mark Fink Absent: Carol Atwood 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner Kolb moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of March 2, 2011. Commissioner Miller seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Commissioner Miller moved to approve the minutes of the special meeting of March 25, 2011. Chair Stevenson seconded and the motion passed unanimously. 4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Wallace Iimura, vice chair for Technology, Information and Communication Commission requested to be added to next Library Commission agenda to share ideas about electronic and information technology at the Cupertino Library. 5. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS None received. 6. REPORTS A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report Mark Fink reviewed the attached monthly report. Noted that the Cupertino Library circulates 10% more than the San Francisco Library. Partnered with the Master Gardener booth for upcoming Earth Day April 9 B. County Librarian Report Melinda Cervantes reviewed the attached monthly report. Commission acknowledged Melinda being honored by the 11 Senatorial District as Woman of the Year. Reported about the recent meeting with Mayor Wong and Vice Mayor Santoro regarding the additional library hours calculations. C. Commissioner Reports Commissioner Grymes will be attending the Parks & Recreation Commission meetings. An issue about bake sales in front of the Library brought up by Friends of Library was discussed. Mark Fink reported that this was discussed with Code Enforcement and that County Communications should be called if any further issues with vendor ;3 if they obstruct access to Library. Commissioner Tsai reported that a group from local the high school and middle school and delegation from City Council will be visiting Sister Cities in China and Taiwan. D. Staff Reports Liz Nunez reported update per attached from Carol Atwood. E. Friends of the Library Commissioner Grymes reported from the Friends of Library that a solution has been instituted by Library to reduce books from disappearing from their sale book inventory. F. Library Foundation Letter sent by Eno Schmidt is attached. Mark Fink distributed flyer for the Rotary's Golf 2011 Hole -in -One fundraiser on May 13, 2011. 7. OLD BUSINESS A. Poet Laureate Update Commissioner Miller reported that the Poet Laureate sub - committee has decided to extend the deadline to July 15, 2011. B. 2011 Work Plan Commissioner discussed all items on Work Plan. Commissioner Kolb inquired about the list of City events. Liz Nunez will send list to Commission before next meeting. Mark Fink will send Commission the Library's Strategic plan, presented at the March 25 special meeting, for further discussion. Commissioner Grymes securing a scan code for commissioners to use in place of paper business cards. C. Library Issues — Stair Edging /Book Drop Water Management Commission and Mark Fink requested that the stair striping be installed for all stairs up to 2n floor. Liz Nunez will relay to Public Works staff. S. NEW BUSINESS A. Commission Liaisons Commission decided to continue discussion next month 9. CALENDAR Next month's Mayor's meeting on April 12 will be attended by Commissioner Tsai. 10.
