FAC 06-21-06 ~ CITY OF CUPEIQ'INO APPROVED MINUTES FINE ARTS COMMISSION Regular Meeting, Conference Room A 10300 Torre Avenue Cupertino June 21, 2006 7:00 P.M. CALL TO ORDER At 7:00 p.m. Chairman Robert Harrison called the meeting to order. ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Robert Harrison, and Commissioners Michael Harkins, Janet Mohr and Ann Woo. Absent: Commissioner Nancy Canter. Staff present: City Clerk Kimberly Smith. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Minutes of April 25 and May 23,2006. Commissioner Woo moved to approve the minutes of April 25, 2006. Motion carried with Canter absent. Commissioner Mohr moved to approve the minutes of May 23,2006. The motion carried with Commissioner Canter absent. PRESENTATIONS - None ORAL COMMUNICATIONS WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS City Clerk Kimberly Smith read a thank you note written for Diana Argabrite's work on the children's art exhibit for the Cherry Blossom Festival. The Commission concurred to sign the note as presented. COMMISSIONER REPORTS 5. Arts-related news updates from Commissioners The Commission discussed the Chinese Performing Arts Competition. 6. Report regarding Mayor's meeting with commissioners (1 st Wed., 7:30 a.m.) The commission received a written report and identified which members would attend the next few meetings. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 7. Preparation of a Percent for Art ordinance. The Commission reviewed text and suggested changes for the document. Commissioner Janet Mohr agreed to review the text for the public safety section and the Commission concurred to review the document and bring any additional changes back to the Commission at the August meeting. June 21, 2006 Cupertino Fine Arts Commission Page 2 NEW BUSINESS 9. Distinguished Artist Award 2006 . Review nomination forms . Consider adding new categories for type of art and/or age group . Consider enhancements to the award (currently a plaque) . Discuss possible venues for displaying the recipient's work City Clerk Kimberly Smith distributed color photos that weren't included in the packet and the Commissioners discussed the two nominations that were received. Commissioner Harkin moved to award the Distinguished Artist of the Year A ward to Corinne Okada Takara. Harrison seconded and motion carried with Commissioner Nancy Canter absent. The Commission also discussed the date and location for the award ceremony. City Clerk will notify the recipient and check their availability. The Commission concurred to present the award check and plaque, if ready, at the Shakespeare Festival in July. Commissioner Harkin will work with the vendor to modify the plaque from the current 5 x 7 size to the new 8 x 10 size. During the discussion, Chairperson Harrison noted that he was not available to attend the August 22 meeting. The Commission concurred to meet on August 15 instead. The Commission concurred to consider adding new categories for type of art, venues for displaying recipient's art and enhancements to the award at a later meeting in the fall. STAFF REPORTS 10. Update on proposal for a Veteran's Memorial sculpture City Clerk reported that Paul Letterri was selected as the landscape architect for the project. It was expected that a sketch would be available in August. NEWS ARTICLES ADJOURNMENT At 9:40 p.m. the meeting was adjourned. The Commission agreed to hold a Regular Adjourned Meeting on Tuesday, August 15, 7:00 p.m. ~
