3) Suggested Routes to school Maps
Each commissioner was assigned two or three schools by Mr. Stillman to comment and
determine potential routes. A general comment was that the map quality was not very good.
Lines are not straight and some crosswalks are non - existent. Commissioners should forward
maps to Mr. Stillman before January 7, 2011 so the GIS person/department can update the maps.
Comments should be included on the marked -up maps sent to Mr. Stillman. After maps are
updated, the maps should be reviewed again by the commission and then reviewed with CUSD.
Commissioner Chan inquired about the process to request additional crosswalks and whether
routes should be placed on streets without sidewalks.
4) Cupertino Cycling Event Brainstorm
The commission discussed potential cycling events that can be hosted by the city. One candidate
would be to coordinate with the annual Big Bunny Fun Run which is sponsored by the Parks and
Recreation Department. Commission is unfamiliar with the route and whether it can be extended
to an acceptable length for an adult cycling event. It would be nice to go over the Mary Avenue
Bridge. Another potential route for a cycling event would use the perimeter road within De
Anza. Vallee's parking lots and interior roadway is also a possibility. Commissioner Chan
suggested doing a kids' only event initially since the route can be short. Chair Takahashi will
contact the Parks and Recreation staff member for more information on the Big Bunny Fun Run.
5) 2011 Commission Goals
Commissioners should send additional goal ideas to Chair Takahashi before the next meeting.
The initial list of goals in no particular order is as follows:
1. Bicycle Friendly Community application completion
2. Improve our web page
3. Promote a cycling event
4. Release the Bicycle Transportation Plan
5. Safe Routes to Schools maps before school starts in August
