7. NEW BUSINESS
A. Work with Teen Commission on Walk One Week program
Director Linder introduced Anna - Kathryn Sengupta, the liaison from the
Teen Commission who will work with the Parks and Recreation
Commission.
Anna- Kathryn said their goal is to get about 3,000 Cupertino students to
participate in the Walk One Week (WOW) program which is tentatively
scheduled for November 4 — November 10. In the WOW program last
April, the Teen Commission offered prizes to the students in order to
promote participation. They also distributed about 1,000 brochures to
various schools. The students earned points by walking, biking and
carpooling to school and received raffle tickets toward the different prize
drawings.
Anna- Kathryn asked for the Commissioners' help with contacts within the
Cupertino business community so that the Teen Commission can ask for
discounts, donations of products or gift cards for the prize drawings. The
Teen Commission is also asking for contacts within the various schools or
school districts.
Commissioner Bradford suggested that the Teen Commission contact the
Chamber of Commerce and also ask students if any of their parents work
for Green companies or recycling companies in the area.
Commissioner Greenstein suggested using City parks as shortcuts for
students and post the different parks maps on the Teen Center's website.
He also said that contacting the PTA's at the various schools is a good
source for outreach to the students and parents.
Commissioner Paul said he is as with the Chamber of Commerce
and that he could look into getting their support to help defray the printing
costs of the WOW flyers.
