2. Consider appointment of Distinguished Artist and Emerging Artist.
Staff Liaison Smith noted that Chairman Chandratreya will present the winner of the
Distinguished Artist award on stage at the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival Performance
on the weekend of August 14.
Commissioner Harrison recommended it :should also be announced at the Shakespeare
Festival that the Distinguished Artist's work will be on display in Cupertino Quinlan Hall
for the Silicon Valley Fall Festival Show September 24 — 26 .
Smith said she would prepare the press release announcement for the Distinguished Artist
Award 2010 winner.
A group discussion commenced regarding the distinguished artist nominees. Chairman
Chandratreya noted the three very distinct artist mediums (digital, paint & performance) of
the nominees. He stressed the criterion (contribution to community, merit, education &
training) would be weighted equally in determining the winner.
The commissioners discussed the relative merits of each person's artwork & level of
community service. Carrie Zeidman was a contemporary artist specializing in digital

technology. Pantea Karimi had a good skill set and power of symmetry, and her work
evokes emotion. Her body of work, recognition and contribution is very good. Vidhya
Subramanian had many accomplishments and experience, and her biography was extensive
with recognition beyond Cupertino.
The commission voted unanimously to select Pantea Karimi as the Distinguished Artist
Award 2010 winner.
3. Status report from ad hoc committee ( Fiegel and Chandratreya) regarding opportunities to
leverage grant funds via the "Evolve" project. Continued from meeting of May 25.
Commissioner Fiegel expressed concern for the level of effort a project of this magnitude
would require, and thought that it would be necessary to have a project manager to oversee
it. He also suggested a Cupertino Art "coffee table" book as a possible fundraising project.
Staff Liaison Smith suggested it may be more appropriate for an outside group to run the
Evolve project and the City of FAC might be a sponsor.
The commission discussed a report that the PW Market had been allowed to provide in -lieu
funds instead of installing public art on their project. It was agreed to put the Evolve
project on hold until staff could confirm the final adopted budget.
4. Continued discussion regarding an event on the "City Arts Day" with the help of other
organizations (First Friday of each October). Continued from meeting of May 25.
Staff Liaison Smith said that the City's Arts day has been thus far ceremonial and included
adoption of an ordinance by the city council. The commission had held earlier discussions
about ways to enlarge the activities. Since, the discussion on this topic has happened in
parallel to the "Evolve" discussion, it was placed on hold until further notice.
Discussion followed regarding the PW Market public art requirement, whether they would
be allowed to provide funds in lieu of the art work, and how that might affect the FAC's
budget. The staff liaison said she would investigate and report back.
