NEW BUSINESS
3) Safe Routes to School
Chair Takahashi contacted CUSD director of facilities, Toby Smith. There is a draft study dated
July 11, 2007, contracted by Vicky Guapo with a third party (California CAD Solutions) to map
the routes. Lt only contains schools within the city limits, and it is unclear if the study was
funded by the city or the district. Mr. Smith is hesitant to release the maps since it does not
cover the entire district. Commission would like to release the maps if it was city funded and
with sonic form of approval from the district.
Chair Takahashi also had a discussion with Alice Kawasaki with the county. She is mainly
working with Sunnyvale via school assessments, meetings, and PTAs. She mentioned having a
school PTA position for bike /walk coordination.
Commissioner Chan mentioned that Boltage is starting up in the tri- school area with Lincoln and
Kennedy enabled via a grant from the Public Safety Commission. Commission has some
overlap on school walk and bike programs with the Public Safety Commission. Chair Takahashi
will communicate with the Public Safety Commission Chair to coordinate. It is envisioned that
Public Safety should continue with the Boltage and other incentive programs since they have
funding. Commission should focus on education and the Safe Routes to School mapping,
especially since it is closely related to the Bicycle Friendly Community application and Bicycle
Transportation Plan.
4) Accident Review
Mr. Stillman provided a map of bicycle and pedestrian related accidents in the city for 2009.
Commission would like more details of the accidents such as severity and fault.
OLD BUSINESS
5) Bicycle Transportation Plan
Commissioner Wiant made a presentation regarding bike parking facilities. He has done a count
of bike parking capacity at several sites. A question came up for the Planning Department
whether there is a requirement for shower facilities and other accommodations for bicycling
destinations like employers. Regarding the plan elements list:
d) Bike parking.
g) Ask Terry Calderone from the Sheriffs office to discuss accidents.
k) This has not been done.
Mr. Stillman and Commissioner Wiant will get together and try to complete the plan before the
next meeting.
6) Bicycle Friendly Community Application Status
There are two due dates August and March. March is the current target. Part 1 is complete.
Mountain View and Sunnyvale are Bronze level. Chair Takahashi will request to see the
Mountain View and Sunnyvale applications in order to gauge what level we can achieve.
Commissioner Wiant will contact the League of American Bicyclists to see if data is available
for application success rate.
7) Hot List Review
Item 4, 22, 27, and 32 should be done. Item 24 is still there, but repaving will be done in a
couple months. Item 29 will be handled by an overlay project on Greenleaf. Item 30 requires
new lights not in the budget and will be re- evaluated later in the fiscal year. Item 31 is under
review. Item 18 will undergo a stop sign evaluation as a result of recent incidents. New item 33
for a pothole in the right turn from Stevens Creek to Peninsula.
