The meeting was called to order at 7:01 pm

ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Shailee Samar presented results from the Middle School and elementary school WOW (Walk
One Week) program. This program, which coincided with week of Earth day, was developed to
promote walking and riding bicycles to school as opposed to being driven to school. Six schools
participated in the program, Sedgwick, Egan, Lawson, Cupertino, Kennedy and Hyde. Some
funding was secured from the city to help with incentives and promotional material. An example
of a hand out that was used to track results for the week was given to the commission. Shailee
stated that the elementary schools had significant participation in the program.
David Stillman noted that the City Council voted to submit the application to designate
Cupertino as a Bicycle Friendly City.

ORDERS OF THE DAY
1) VTA BPAC Update: Jim Wiant discussed items from this month's VTA meeting. Items
included:
• Discussion on Bike events in the county and that regulations guiding them needing
revision.
• Discussion about concerns over congestion on the San Thomas Aquino trail from Monroe
to Svale Baylands due to the potential new football stadium in Santa Clara.
• A revised VTA bikeways map was released to the Web.

2) The Commission approved the April; 2010 minutes as written.
NEW BUSINESS
3) Bike Walk to Work Day Debrief: Commissioner Wiant discussed results from the Bike to
Work Day on May 13 °i. The BPC hosted an energizer station on Stelling at the Quinlan
Community Center. Joe Walton brought coffee cake from Hobbies and Coffee as well. Other
volunteers included Commissioners William Chan and Alan Takahashi. Ann Ng rounded out the
volunteer staff for the station. The final count was 140 Northbound and 96 southbound cyclists
between 6:30 and 9:00 in the morning. Total bike traffic was higher by 2 than the prior year.
Morita Vista Bike Walk to School Day May 19'x'. Commissioner Takahashi briefed the
commission on the Monta Vista event. the Morita Vista PTA worked to put on this event to
promote walking and riding to school. Several volunteers worked to prepare breakfast for
participants as well as gather prizes for the event. The city funded this event at $1;000 to
supplement the breakfast and prizes. The Mayor attended the event and helped out at the
breakfast distribution table. Overall the event was successful. Final participant count was not
available for the meeting given the event occurred on the morning of the BPC meeting.
4) Pedestrian Transportation plan: Commissioner Wiant noted that the Pedestrian plan need to
be well coordinated with the overall city development plan given close link between pedestrian
planning and development and overall urban density. Commissioner Wiant will. follow up on the
;eneral plan for the city and analyze how it can work with a developing pedestrian plan.
Eventually the Pedestrian plan could be merged with the Bicycle Transportation plan.

6) Bicycle Transportation Plan
Marked up copies of the plan from City Staff were reviewed by the commission. The mark ups
were generated by David Stillman with a focus on the proposed bicycle routes and
improvements. Each proposed route was reviewed. It also was decided that the plan will be
presented reviewed by the public in the July meeting.
7) Hot List Review
The current hot list was reviewed and updated.
