Leader 95014, draft-; 0 DRAFT OVERVIEW Leadership 95014 Leadership 95014 is a dynamic training and development program created to build the capacity of current and emerging leaders for a greater contribution in their local community. This intense 9-month program offers a rich blending of policy awareness across sectors, skill refinement in critical thinking, collaborative problem -solving, performance improvement, and relationship - building among local thought leaders, public practitioners, and active participants working to strengthen community. Leadership 95014 is an essential building block for those interested in making a difference in the quality of life in Cupertino and local region as well as accelerating personal development in a sophisticated Silicon Valley laboratory. Cupertino is a community that faces opportunities and challenges in many areas including cross- cultural relations, economic development, and maintaining a balanced quality of life for its citizenry. With its rising surge in immigrant populations in recent decades, this ethnically diverse community is the only city in the South Bay Area with a new non -white majority. This ® shift in the social fabric of the community has been felt across neighborhoods, schools, businesses and government and circumstances are ripe for the quality of leadership that can build bridges and work collaboratively for the common good. This requires leaders of all backgrounds to engage in personal growth opportunities together which makes Leadership 95014 an essential incubator. Additionally, Cupertino is not unlike its neighboring municipalities which are wrestling with the balance of attracting, hosting and retaining businesses of global importance in the technology industry as well as sustaining local businesses. As economic circumstances rise and fall, it is important for local leaders to understand the ongoing needs of the spectrum of business types such as the security, taxation, hospitality, business services, advertising, workspace inventory, etc. Likewise, a knowledge base needs to be enhanced for economic development opportunities appropriate for this region that adapt with the transitions of business opportunities such as green tech. Furthermore, the ability to evaluate opportunities and discover adaptable and appropriate solutions for supporting local businesses is key to livelihood of this city. Leadership 95014 will not only expose participants to real dilemmas and the debates of decision -makers, but also compose a class of participants who can offer firsthand knowledge of the competing needs of businesses across the scale from large to small corporations. For Cupertino to maintain its magnetic reputation for academic excellence, a keen understanding ® of its K-14 educational system is a core component of the Leadership 95014 program. The role of higher education in developing a competitive workforce will be explored as well as the community impact of a high demand public school system. A vibrant and thriving Cupertino of the 21" century requires the same thing it did 50 years ago when the city incorporated - capable and confident leaders who know each other and can work well together. These leaders come from our corporations, small and medium businesses, non- profit organizations, service clubs, and our elected officials. A competitive annual selection process will produce a small class of participants who will be challenged, guided and facilitated a professional training staff provided by the program sponsors. Through interactive and fast -paced programs in the field and the classroom, Leadership 95014 will address in-depth issues facing the community such as the environment, education, economic development, cultural diversity, and quality of life through the lens of a class of participants that reflects the diversity available in its neighborhoods and marketplace. The program will produce neighbors who better understand the range of the city's business needs and decision makers who grasp the broad vision that Cupertino is part of a regional system and not an island unto itself. Leadership 95014 offers participants an opportunity to learn the synergistic relationship between businesses, government, education, and the social sector with an output of transformational personal leadership skill development that will benefit their careers, organizations, and neighborhoods. In the end, Leadership 95014 will build a network of leaders and cadre of community collaborators, problem -solvers and participants who will carry an expectation for their own local contribution and achievement.
