Bone Marrow Drive
The Asian American Donor Program held a bone marrow drive in the library on December 19 in Ja-Lih's
memory. The event also included a book signing by several well-known Chinese authors. The Cupertino
Courier and San Jose Mercury News both carried nice articles about this event, which you can see here:

Community Outreach
Gayathri Kanth and Rosanne did a presentation about the library's electronic resources to the West
San Jose Kiwanis group, which consists of several member: from Cupertino.
Peet's Coffee in Cupertino (Homestead) does a fundraiser every year the week before Christmas.
This year they chose the Cupertino Library as the recipient of donations. On December 24, they gave
free coffee and tea to customers, and encouraged them to make a donation to the library. Peet's
corporate headquarters matches local funds, and we should be receiving a check in February.
December Programs
In addition to our regular storytimes, class visits, and knitting group, we also had a program on the
Art of Sudoku featuring World Sudoku Champion Thomas Snyder. We held our Cupertino Cinema
Club for school-age children and their families, our adult book group discussed Rebecca by Daphne
Du Maurier, and our Bookworms book club for first and second graders featured George and Martha
by James Marshall.
Our first ever "Teen Study Nights" was a big success! In p:rx-tnership with Cupertino's Parks and
Recreation Department, and with snacks provided by the Friends of the Library, we had about 150
teens participate next door at Community Hall. It was quieter in there than the library, and the teens
were actually STUDYING! Kudos to Dolly Goyal, our teen librarian, for putting this together. We
plan to do it again in June.
Upcoming Programs
For children, our storytimes will resume in January, with 4 storytimes per week and class visits. We
will hold another Cupertino Cinema Club, and will be doing a program on exploring the library
catalog.
Our adult services will feature a program on low cost immigration legal services, with a
representative from the International Rescue Committee. Our adult book group will discuss this
year's Silicon Valley Reads selection In Defense ofFoad by Michael Pollan.
For teens, we will be having a "Name That Album" coritest. All teens who can correctly name the
band and album for each album cover displayed in the teen area will receive a prize and have their
name entered into a grand prize drawing.
We will be promoting our essay contest in conjunction with Silicon Valley Reads. This year we will
be featuring categories for both adults and teens. Essays will be due in February and the winners will
be announced at our event on March 20.
