BPC 04-15-09MINUTES OF TH>E: REGULAR MEETING OF THE BICYCLE P)E;DESTRIAN COMMISSION AIPRIL 15, 2009 CUPERTINO The meeting was called to order at 7:06 pm ROLL CALL: Present: Wiant, Takahashi, Fantozzi Absent: Armstrong, Paulsen Staff None VISITORS: Joe Walton - VTA Bicycle Commission Anne Ng -Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Commissioner Wiant received a complaint from a residence about the bicycle/pedestrian path at the intersection of Mary and Meteor for access to the Mary Bridge. She expressed concern about emergency vehicles making the turn. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS Commissioner Wiant received an email from Lauren Phillips, Recreation Coordinator about the Walk to School event Wednesday April 22, 2009 sponsored by the Teen Commission. Lauren will be around Cupertino high schools the afternoon before the event with recreation staff to encourage teens to walk to school. The Commission is welcomed to help out with this effort. She will order T-shirts for the event to be worn by the participants. She can be reached at laurenh cr,cupertino.org. Commissioner Wiant received names of two contacts at cycling clubs for Cupertino High School and Monta Vista High School from Lauren Phillips. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The Commission approved the March 18, 2009 with minor corrections. OLD BUSINESS Bicycle Transportation Plan Commissioner Wiant to pull package together for May completion date. Bike to Work Day Commissioner Wiant reported that we have a possibility for two energizer stations Joe Walton proposed having fliers to hand out about the Mary Bridge. Commissioner Fantozzi proposed getting a count of the number of first time bicycle with the questionnaire and counter. This will provide insight into how many people are being attracted to bicycling as a means of transpoih:ation. This will help us to determine what Cupertino needs to do make it a safer, easier place to bike. Safety is a big concern for most people are not comfortable riding on bu;~y streets. There was a discussion on safety classes and distributing safe route maps. work on getting people comfortable biking locally and interesting in biking. Coffee will be provided by Roasted Coffee and Hobbee's will provide coffee cake. Joe Walton proposed providing gifts and stickers to those riding over the Mary Bridge as a souvenir for riding over the bridge. Volunteers needed. VTA Bike Technical Guidelines Commissioner Takahashi moved to endor;~e the VTA Bike Technical Guidelines. Commissioner Fantozzi seconded the motion. The VTA Bike Technical Guidelines approved. NEW BUSINESS School Incentives to Get Students to Bike or \valk to School Commissioner Takahashi discussed his part~.cipation in a class presentation he did in three 3`d grade classes asking the students about biking and walking to school. He asked how the students how they got to school. 9 students walked, 2 biked and 56 were driven. Out the 56 that drove to school, about 20% c~u-pooled. The Commission discussed ways to motivate students to bike or walk to school. Commissioner Wiant suggested we contact Richard Swent at rswent(a,pacbell.net. Mr. Swent started abike/walk to school program in Palo Alto and he may have some advice on how to set up a program in Cupertino. Cupertino Bike Education Proposal No action.
