LIB 03-04-09City of Cupertino Library Commission Regular Meeting March 4, 2009 1. CALL TO ORDER At 7:02 p.m. Commissioner Miller called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue, Conference Room 100, Cupertino. 2. ROLL CALL 8z INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEMBERS Commissioners: Adrian Kolb, Ron Miller, Kathy Stakey, Ann Stevenson, Susanna Tsai, City/County Library Staff: Melinda Cervantes, Rosanne Macek, Dorothy Steenfott Absent: None 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner Stakey moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of February 4, 2009. Commissioner Stevenson seconded and motion passed unanimously. 4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. 5. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS The Commission received a copy of an NPR article regarding finances and an invitation to attend the Spring Fever Art Display reception on April 3. 6. REPORTS A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report Rosanne Macek reviewed the attached monthly report. B. County Librarian Report Melinda Cervantes reviewed the attached monthly report. C. STAFF REPORTS None. D. Commissioners Commissioner Tsai reported that. the Hsinchu mayor was coming to Cupertino on March 20. She also reported that she and Commissioners Miller and Kolb attended the Los Altos Library Commission meeting. Commissioner Kolb reported th:~t she attended a breakout session on turning non-users of the library into supporters during the February 28 CALTAC Northern Workshop. March 4, 2009 Library Commission Minutes Page 2 Commissioner Stevenson reviewed the economic development packet information she received during; her meeting with the City's Economic Development Manager, Kelly Kline. Discussion followed regarding how the library could be promoted more throughout the business community. It was noted that a meeting between Commissioner Stevenson, Kelly Kline, and Rosanne Macek would be beneficial. Commissioner Miller reported on various meetings he attended including CALTAC. E. Friends of the Library Commissioner Stakey reported 1:hat past officers were re-elected to serve in 2009. She also noted that the book sale held on February 28 and March 1 was very successful. F. Library Foundation Commissioner Stevenson reported that the Foundation would like to have Commissioners attend meetings as often as possible. She also noted that the Foundation would like to have Commissioner input into the planning of the five year anniversary celebration for the library. 7. OLD BUSINESS A. Torre Avenue Traffic Update Commissioner Stakey reported that. she attended the Public Safety meeting regarding safety issues, including lighting of the crosswalk on Torre Avenue. The Public Safety Commission is developing its work plan for 2009. Commissioner Stakey will continue to attend the Public Safety Commission meetings to follow up on their progress regarding the safety issues on Torre Avenue. B. Aquarium Maintenance for Future Years Recording Secretary Dorothy St~~enfott reported that the maintenance agreement was not expiring in O~~tober of 2009, but would continue for another five years at half of the $16,200 total cost by the current provider. The Commission was not interested in locating a donor. C. Discussion of Draft 2009 Work Plan Commissioner Stakey suggested that an ad hoc committee be formed to compile a draft document for the full Commission to review at the next meeting. Commissioners Stakey and Miller firmed an ad hoc committee to review the current draft. March 4, 2009 Library Commission Minutes Page 3 8. NEW BUSINESS None. 9. CALENDAR Commissioner Stevenson will update the calendar to include the Mayor's meetings. Commissioners Kolb and Tsai will attend the March and April Mayor's meetings, respectively. The JPA meeting will be meld on April 23. 10. AGENDA BUILDING Library building safety issues and parkirig were added to the April agenda. 11. I will be filling; in as Acting Community Librarian while Ja-Lih Lee is out on medical leave. I have been with Santa Clara County Library for almost seven years, most of that as Community Librarian iii Morgan Hill. Prior to that I worked at several local high-tech companies, including fifteen years at Apple, so I feel right at home in Cupertino! Statistics Jan. 09 vs, Jan. 08 Circulation +9% Visits (Gate count) +2% New library cards -23% Use of our libraries continues to increase, with a greater demand for our services during these difficult economic times. There were 246 uses of the job kiosk in the library. February Children's Programs Our regular storytimes, held 4 times per week, continue to be extremely popular with an average of 80 attendees per session. In addition, wee held many other fun children's programs in February. These included: Valentine crafts, movie showing of Enchanted, a Red Cross safety program for kindergarten through second grade, book discussion for grades 4-8, and a California Young Reader Medal program featuring stories, snacks, and voting. Our biggest crowd was for the Valentine craft program which drew 128 attendees. February Adult Programs In addition to a regular drop-in knitting program every Tuesday afternoon, we held these adult programs: An Evening with Katherine Kurtz, a training session on how to use the library catalog, Feng Shui for the Year of the Ox, and our adult book discussion group. The Feng Shui program was particularly popular with 8F3 attendees. New County Library Services We have new photocopiers for the public that will allow color printing and copying for twenty cents per page. This new service will begin April 1. WiFi printing is currently being testing in our Morgan Hill Library. Once all the details have been worked out, this will be rolled out to all our lit~raries one at a time. Upcoming March Programs March 4: Dr. Seuss Readers Theatre featuring i"he Cat in the Hat was held today with approximately 120 attendees. March 7: Outclass the Competition: Business ]3tiquette and Professional Image. March 1 1: Magician Tony Daniels. March 12: Movie showing of Shrek the Third. March 16: Become a Savvy Stock Investor Usi~~g Online Financial Databases, presented by Silicon Valley Chapter BetterInvesting. March 18: Continuum of Care: Care Options fir Seniors, presented by the Sarah Care Adult Day Care of Campbell. March 19: Book group discussion of People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. March 25: Picturing America quilting program including a representative of the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. Plus ongoing regular storytimes and knitting group. Peggy Harris, one of our children's librarians, will also be doing outreach to all Cu~~ertino preschools with her Mother Goose program. New Staff We are very happy to welcome some new staff to Cupertino Library! Dolly Goyal will be joining us as half-time teen librarian, coming to us from our Saratoga Library. Dawn Palma and Renee Meyers will also be joining us as clerks.
