PSC 11-20-08CUPERTINO PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION MEETING N[INUTES SPECIAL MEETING Thursday, November 2;0, 2008, 7:00 p.m. Cupertino City Hall Conference Room A I. CALL TO ORDER Commissioner Charles Caldwell called to order the regular meeting of the Cupertino Public Safety Commission at 7:03 p.m. on Thursday, November 20, 2008 in the Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue, Conference Room A, Cupertino, California 95014. II. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Charles Caldwell Nina Daruwalla Daniel Nguyen The commission welcomed the new commissioner, Daniel Nguyen, to the Public Safety Commission. Commissioners Absent: Tamara Pow Other Present: Captain Terry Calderone, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Other Absent: Santa Clara County Fire Department III. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Speaker, Mike Wincn addressed the commission regarding a number of accidents and speeding vehicles in the area of Granada Avenue and Byrne Avenue. Mr. Wincn is requesting assistance from the city because this is an ongoing problem and has gotten progressively worst over the years. Speaker, Robert Haddick addressed the commission regarding vehicles driving on the bicycle lanes, while the lane is occupied by a bicyclist in the area of Creekside Park, Miller Avenue at Howard Court. Mr. Haddick has tried to address this issue with the city manager and has not received a response that will address the problem. Mr. Haddick is requesting assistance from the city to improve this ongoing problem. Huong Dang and Craig Lee were viewers and did not address the commission. IV. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS There were no written communications to discuss at this regular meeting. V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES I . October 09, 2008 ACTION: NO VOTE: NO MOTION: No SECONDED: No 0 to 0 The minutes for October 09, 2008 were not approved. VI. OLD BUSINESS 1. Radar Speed Signs ACTION: NO VOTE: NO MOTION: No SECONDED: No 0 to 0 Captain Terry Calderone discussed with the commission the study on the radar speed signs. The Traffic Consultant is still conducting the research and I:im Morganthaler will provide a report to Captain Calderone in another month. 2. Safe Routes to School (Traffic Consultant) ACTION: NO VOTE: NO MOTION: No SECONDED: No 0 to 0 The Safe Routes to School is still under research, and Mr. Morganthaler will provide a report to Captain Calderone in January 2009. 3. Discuss Teen Commission Recommendations for incentives to walk/bike to school ACTION: NO VOTE: NO MOTION: No SECOI`fDED: No 0 to 0 Captain Calderone made a request to the Teen Commission for more information. No response has been received. 4. Business District Watch ACTION: NO VOTE: NO MOTION: No SECONDED: No 0 to 0 Captain Calderone notified the commission that a fe~v restaurants and businesses have the Business Watch due to the takeover robberies in the bay area and break-ins that have occurred in the city. VII. REPORTS 1. Santa Clara County Fire Department No Report. 2. Santa Clara County Sheriff s Office 2 Captain Calderone reports that a large number of auto burglaries have occurred, and six (6) arrests have been made in the last two (2) months. The same type of items being stolen are GPS units, laptops, ipods, purses, and wallets. The patrol units are gearing iap for the holiday season and will be more proactive around the shopping centers as well as residential neighborhoods. The city has not had the opportunity to address the crosswalk issue at Stelling Road and Alves Drive. There has been a rise of automobile accidents, especially during the time change and the holiday seasons approaching. 3. Commissioner's Reports No Report. VIII.
