February 2025 Library Report
Jennifer Weeks, County Librarian
Mark Your Calendar with Silicon
Valley Read Events in February
The county’s biggest reading program is
here and SCCLD is marking the occasion
with dozens of events this month and next
under the theme of EMPOWERING
HUMANITY: Technology for a Better World.
Dr. Pascal Lee, planetary scientist affiliated
with the SETI Institute, the Mars Institute, and NASA Ames Research Center will deliver two talks, “Are
We Alone in the Universe?” and “The Moon and Mars: Amazing Places for Humans to Soon Explore.”
Dr. Lee is helping to prepare for the eventual exploration of the Red Planet, leading numerous trips to
hostile Earth environments in the Arctic and Antarctica that are akin to what awaits us on Mars.
AI is useful for a lot of other things, including cooking! Our libraries are hosting three different events
around how to discover new recipes and improve on existing ones with the help of smart apps. The
Gilroy Library has kid friendly and adult focused events on February 1, while the Los Altos Library has
an event for tweens and teens on February 3.
Kids and teens will love the RAFT Maker Mobile, a traveling makerspace that will drop by all of our
libraries to challenge young learners with a variety of STEAM-based tasks. Our South County libraries
are also offering courses on how to use your smartphone to take great photos and shoot video.
Other AI-related subjects include talks on self-driving cars, investing in the technology, its impact on
education and learning, issues around AI and healthcare, and how to use AI to find your next job. Find
details about these and other events in our Monthly Calendar. Our Online Calendar has the latest
information.
Silicon Valley Reads’ Calendar of Events lists even more talks and activities taking place countywide.
Please note that SCCLD Libraries and Bookmobile Service will be closed on
Monday, February 17 for Presidents Day. Our Online Library is open 24/7.

Black History is American History
This year’s Black History Month theme is “African
Americans and Labor,” which calls to mind the many
types of work that have been experienced by members
of the community throughout our country’s history.
What people do for a living helps to inform our sense
of self and our societal status.
Our libraries’ Black History Month programming kicks off (literally) with a series of Capoeira for
Beginners classes. This Brazilian invention melds elements of martial arts, dance, and music into an
energetic workout that is fun and challenging. Drummer extraordinaire Mr. Boom Boom returns to four
of our libraries later in the month to share his love of African culture and music in a family friendly show.
Book clubs and discussions will take place throughout the month. Journalist and author Lee Hawkins
will give a virtual talk about his memoir, I Am Nobody’s Slave, on Tuesday, February 18. There will
also be two craft events, one on paper and felt quilt making, another on Mardi Gras mask crafting.
Our librarians have created booklists around Black History month. Check out the SCCLD Librarians for
Adults page for lists about jazz musicians and black chefs, with an emphasis on southern cooking.
Latest on Storybook SCCLD
Work is underway in the Children’s area of the
Saratoga Library to install the first of our new
Storybook SCCLD early literacy interactive spaces.
Morgan Hill Library is next up, with construction
starting on February 12. See the current schedule
below.
• Saratoga Library: Install 1/21/25 - mid March
• Morgan Hill Library: Install 2/12/2025 - mid April
Children’s materials at the Saratoga Library can be found in the community room and events will be held
in the Maple Room or other noted locations during construction. For Morgan Hill, children’s books will be
in the lobby and front of the children’s area during construction.
Each Storybook location will have its own theme based on something unique to each city and
environment. For Saratoga, with a beautiful city backdrop of established redwood forests, the theme is
Redwood Romp, with robot mascot TreeBot. Morgan Hill, with the gently rolling hills and backdrop of El
Toro, Trusty Trails is the theme and HikerBot your trusted guide to greet visitors. Get to know all the
friendly bots and their unique personalities and interests in our introductory video.
Visit sccld.org/storybook for the latest news and dates around this project.

Help Another Adult in your Community
by Becoming a Tutor Volunteer
SCCLD’s Reading Program offers free 1-on-1
tutoring for adults who want to achieve their goals
and improve reading, writing, speaking and listening
skills. Pairs meet for weekly tutoring either online or
in-person for 2 hours a week for at least 6 months.
Individuals 18 years and older are eligible to become
tutors, with multiple one hour in-person orientations taking place at the Milpitas Library in March and the
Gilroy Library in April. Details here. For those who decide that they want to continue, training is
available after the orientations. No previous teaching experience is required.
Those who have tutored find the experience rewarding. Learners are better able to reach longtime
goals like obtaining a high school diploma, getting a job or promotion, assisting children with their
homework, and communicating more effectively with teachers, doctors, coworkers and neighbors.
For more information, email readingprogram@sccl.org or call (408) 262-1349 if you are in Campbell,
Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, or Saratoga. Those who are in Morgan Hill
or Gilroy can call (408) 848-5366.
SCCLD also offers English Conversation Clubs for English learners. Our ESL Clubs and Resources
page has more information for those seeking to improve their literacy skills.
