December has a number of important cultural events, from the Winter Solstice (Dec. 21), to Christmas (Dec. 25), Hanukkah (Dec. 25 to Jan. 2), Kwanzaa (Dec. 26 to Jan. 1), and of course New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The Library is here to help make your season bright with a variety of activities and resources. Interested in arts and crafts? Our Creativebug resource offers unlimited access to over 1,000 online art and craft video classes and tutorials. Whether you’re looking to start a new hobby or find ideas for holiday décor, you’ll find it there. New York Times Cooking has a wide variety of recipes that you can explore to find fun new flavors. Want to curl up with a great read? Our librarians have compiled booklists for you to enjoy. There are multiple categories of novels, nonfiction titles and more for adults, teens and kids. And of course we have lots of great events. From visits by Santa, film screenings, and crafts for making ornaments, wreaths and holiday cards, to board games and book clubs, we’re a winter wonderland of activity. Make sure your household is safe at a Holiday Fire Safety Workshop. We also have New Year’s celebrations and a puppet show at three of our libraries. Check our Event Calendar for details. These free sessions teach attendees what they need to know to properly administer naloxone nasal spray (better known by its commercial name of Narcan). While the number of overdose deaths has recently dropped of late, there are still far too many people dying from fentanyl and other drugs. Luckily, there is hope with knowledge and access to this life-saving drug. Those who attend the classes, which will be led by the Q Corner’s Harm ReduQion Project, will receive doses to take home (while supplies last). Registration for the classes is not required, but is recommended. Gilroy Library: Morgan Hill Library: December 2 at 7 p.m. December 2 at 4 p.m. December 12 at 4 p.m. December 16 at 6:30 p.m. Fun with the Big Bad Wolf The Puppet Art Theater Co. is back with another delightful children’s tale told through the magic of puppetry. They will be presenting the Little Red Riding Hood Puppet Show (Holiday Edition) at three libraries, all on Saturday December 28. There are two shows in South County, performing at 10:30 AM at Morgan Hill Library, followed by a 2 PM Gilroy Library show. Or you can attend the performance at 4:30 PM at the Los Altos Library. Just beware of any wolves that talk to you on the way there. Please note that SCCLD Libraries and Bookmobile Service will be closed on Wed., Dec. 25 for Christmas Day and Wed., January 1 for New Year’s Day. You can watch dozens of meet-cute, mystery, comedy and drama movies and shows using Hoopla’s BingePass option, which allows unlimited access to their selections for seven days from a computer, tablet or cell phone.
