Recreation Coordinator, Robert Kaufman, presented the PrepZone application for
Highlight by Teen Commission.
Questions from Commissioners:
• What do they mean by community event? Unclear.
• How many other applicants? One other applicant. The organization will present
at a future meeting.
• Can we revisit the applicant evaluation in the future? Consider the application
tonight.
Comments from Commissioners:
• It would be nice to see results, but the idea is a good one.
• It would be good to show how they are different from ChatGPT.
• The idea of the organization is good. It would have been good to have more
information, but the idea is good.
• Because there are not many applicants, approving this one might help to get the
program going.
Recreation Manager, Sonya Lee, clarified the process for the evening was to determine
if the applicant should be highlighted by Teen Commission on Instagram. Recreation
Coordinator Kaufman clarified the process that was set up by Teen Commission.

Cupertino Teen Commission Minutes June 12, 2024
Commissioner Hu motioned to approve the PrepZone Youth Led Organization
application for Highlight by Teen Commission. Commissioner Mukherjee seconded the
motion. Motion carried with 6 yes and 3 absent.
4. Subject: Presentation on 2025 Teen Events
Recommended Action: Receive a presentation and provide feedback on 2025 Teen
Events from Recreation Coordinator, Robert Kaufman.
Business and Boba – Event was not able to come to fruition in spring. Now trying to
revamp with a different sponsor for Boba. Tentatively scheduled for next spring.
Speaker based event addressing entrepreneurialism and business.
Pizza and Politics – Back this year in October. Happens every other year. Hosted
traditionally with cities of Saratoga and Campbell. Three sections to the event. First
Mayor’s Roundtable. Second FUSHD roundtable. Third student debate. Will have a
Teen Commission moderator, likely the chair.
Cupertino Café – Event in December. Used to be in December and May, but May had
less participation so was stopped. This is an open hall study session with snacks and
booth partners. Likely will be December 14.
Spelling Bee – Starting in 2023, event was planned by YAB and moderated and judged
by Teen Commission. Surveys from parents loved the format.
HACK – Overnight hackathon. This year was the first year we charged for the event.
Initially it was $15 for residents and $20 for non-residents. We discounted the fee to $5
and $10 because of low participation numbers initially. Want feedback on whether we
should continue the overnight format.
Summer Kickoff and Splash Bash – Similar to end of school events. End of May event. Is
it better to move event to end of summer or beginning of school year?
Questions from Commissioners:
• None
Comments from Commissioners:
• Keep HACK overnight.
• The end of year event should be in mid-June. Teens are too busy in May.
Public Comment:
• Netra Khot, Cupertino resident, commented on Business and Boba Event.
