ROLL CALL Present: Biswari, Chen, Cheung, Garg, Gupta, Hu, Kumar, Mukherjee, Shah. Absent: none. Staff: Sonya Lee, Tommy Yu. CEREMONIAL MATTERS AND PRESENTATIONS 1. Subject: Presentation on Disco at Dusk Recommended Action: Receive a presentation on Disco at Dusk from Recreation Manager, Alex Greer. Commissioners received information on Disco at Dusk to be held on 06/21/2024 at Community Hall from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Questions from Commissioners: • Can you change the genre of music mid event? Yes. • What was the turn out last year? About 50 people. 2. Subject: Presentation on Techie Teens Recommended Action: Receive a presentation on Techie Teens from Recreation Manager, Alex Greer. Commissioners received a presentation on Techie Teens, a program in which a selected group of volunteer teens help seniors with their technical devices. This is a summer only program. The applications for the teen roles were taken from March to April. Questions from Commissioners: 6 Cupertino Teen Commission Minutes May 8, 2024 • How long has the program been running? Several years before Covid. This is the first post Covid year that the program will run. • Once a teen is accepted to the program, do they have to work all the sessions? The sessions are split between all of the teen volunteers. • How many teens applied this year? 11 teens. • Are there plans to run the program during the school year? Right now, this is a summer only program. 3. Subject: Presentation on Youth Led Organization, PrepZone.ai Recommended Action: Receive a presentation on Youth Led Organization, PrepZone.ai from Mihir Gupta. Commissioners received a presentation on Prepzone which utilizes a student’s study materials to create customized learning tools. The platform generates summaries, key terms, and devises personalized quizzes directly from student’s notes and textbooks. Questions from Commissioners: • Is it a website or an app? A website. • Do you plan to eventually charge? For right now it is free. • Do you have a partner? Yes, he could not make it for the presentation. • Does it work for math? Yes, but a little differently. • Will it work with a physical textbook? There is a way to make images work, but he has not done it yet. • Does it work with all languages? Yes. • Is there an option for multiple choice questions? Not right now. • Why this over Chatdpt? There is no ability to make a quiz. Comments from Commissioner: • Make it visually less words. • Submit to Hackathons for funding. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 4. Subject: Approval of Minutes – March 13, 2024 Recommended Action: Review and approve the minutes from the Teen Commission meeting on March 13, 2024. Vice Chair Cheung moved to approve the March meeting minutes. Commissioner Chen seconded the motion. The commission voted 9-0 to approve the minutes. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS 7 Cupertino Teen Commission Minutes May 8, 2024 No written communications. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS No oral communications. OLD BUSINESS No old business. NEW BUSINESS 5. Subject: Presentation on Teen Resource Fair Recommended Action: Receive a presentation and provide feedback on Teen Resource Fair from Recreation Manager, Sonya Lee. Commissioner feedback on Teen Resource Fair: • Provide volunteer opportunities outside of the City. • Passports worked well to encourage going to each booth. • Age for most opportunities was 17-18. Provide more opportunities for younger teens. • Provide opportunities for paid jobs besides city jobs. • Incorporate food stores at Main Street more. • Expand the fair. • Location was great. • Other location that would be good is Civic Center Plaza. • Good to keep the whole fair together rather than split booths on the back field. • Invite student organizations. • Invite tutoring organizations. 6. Subject: Review recent speaking opportunities for Teen Commissioners Recommended Action: Review and provide feedback on recent speaking opportunities for Teen Commissioners. Commissioner feedback on involvement for events: • Teen Resource Fair: o Answered lots of questions about the Teen Commission. o Could have used more flyers. o 2-3 Commissioners at any one time available to answer questions was perfect. 8 Cupertino Teen Commission Minutes May 8, 2024 • HACK: o Good to have a Teen Commissioner judge. It gives a different perspective. o Need more volunteers such as mentors. • Earth Day Festival: o More Master of Ceremonies needed. o 2-3 Commissioners for the day would be better. • Big Bunny 5K and Kids Fun Run: o Kudos to Shivika and Anika for representing Teen Commission. 7. Subject: Teen Commission Summer Meeting Schedule Recommended Action: Discuss summer meeting schedule and availability of Commissioners to attend meetings. June 12 – Three Commissioners cannot attend. • June 12 will try to hold the meeting. July 10 – Three Commissioners cannot attend. • July 10 will likely cancel. August 14 – All can attend as of now. • August 14 will check on availability later. STAFF AND COMMISSION REPORTS • Staff Updates o Staff Report  Sonya Lee, Recreation Manager, gave an update on teen programs and events. • Commissioner Updates o No updates. FUTURE AGENDA SETTING No future agenda items were added.
